The Samsung Electronics smartphone Galaxy S3 has sold more than 10 million units in just 50 days, the fastest for a cellphone in the company`s history.
Shin Jong-kyun, in charge of information technology and mobile communications for Samsung Electronics, briefed reporters on the sales record Sunday at Gimpo International Airport while seeing off Samsung Chairman Lee Kun-hee, who was leaving for London to attend the Summer Olympics.
We are witnessing brisk sales of the Galaxy S3 and its sale has surpassed 10 million units, Shin said.
The S3 was unveiled to the public May 3 in London and sales began May 29 in the U.K. followed by the U.S. and China in early June and in Korea June 25. Selling 10 million units in 50 days means the cellphone sold an average 200,000 units per day, 83,000 units per hour, or 2.3 units per second.
An insider of the electronics industry said, In the world mobile phone market, the Galaxy S3 is the only cellphone except the Apple iPhone that reached sales of 10 million units in such a short period of time.
The Galaxy S recorded 10 million units in sales in eight months after its May 2010 release while the S2 reached the figure five months after its launch in April last year.
