U.S. companies hustle to re-staff, reopen after Sandy

NEW YORK/CHICAGO (Reuters) - After Hurricane Sandy devastated the East Coast, companies scrambled on Tuesday to assess the damage and figure out how to staff up as soon as possible.

Transportation hubs in New York and Washington were closed due to Sandy, one of the biggest storms to ever hit the country. The storm bashed the coast for hours with high winds and waves that caused widespread flooding, then Sandy dropped just below hurricane status before making landfall on Monday night in New Jersey.

With the holiday season quickly approaching, retailers in particular hurried to get back to business.

Luxury department store Saks Inc said it would reopen on Tuesday three of the stores that it had to close because of Sandy, including stores in greater Washington and Philadelphia.

The retailer's flagship on Manhattan's Fifth Avenue, which generates about 20 percent of company sales, along with five other stores in New Jersey and Connecticut, are set to reopen on Wednesday, a spokeswoman said.

Saks said it would not be coordinating transportation for employees.

"In the NYC store, many associates live nearby, and we can operate the store with lower staffing levels if needed," a representative said.

Similarly, Macy's Inc said its iconic Herald Square flagship store in Manhattan, and others in the city and in parts of New Jersey, would stay closed on Tuesday. Others in the East will open through the course of the day.

"The determining factor is if the store and shopping center have electricity, and if associates are able to get to work," a Macy's spokesman said, adding that the company had 195 stores closed all or part of the day Monday, about a quarter of its footprint.

Wal-Mart Stores Inc had 267 stores closed as of late Monday night due to the storm. By Tuesday afternoon, that was down to 80 stores in 10 states.

The world's largest retailer said none of its facilities had been seriously damaged and there was no disruption of holiday planning.

The Wal-Mart emergency operations center in Bentonville, Arkansas was running at full speed. Along with the meteorologist on staff, there were people working on issues such as logistics, emergency merchandise and fuel for generators.

"I think the lesson is that the East Coast needs to prepare for hurricanes just like the Gulf Coast needs to because, you know, that's an area that prior to Irene was not an issue," said Mark Cooper, Wal-Mart's senior director of global emergency management.

Ikea, which has nine stores from Maryland to Connecticut, hopes to reopen all but the store in the Red Hook section of Brooklyn on Wednesday. Nevertheless, the decision 10 years ago to elevate the Red Hook store above the parking lot was fortuitous, said spokesman Joseph Roth. "Certainly there is water along the esplanade, the whole waterfront area there, but the store itself appears to have weathered it relatively fine."

DESPERATELY SEEKING A CUP OF JOE

New Yorkers searching for a cup of coffee had more luck with small chains or delis, or in some cases, Dunkin' Donuts , than Starbucks .

On the Upper West Side of Manhattan, two Starbucks stores on Broadway six blocks apart were both closed with a sign in the window: "Blame the weatherman, not us. Sorry but we are closed to inclement weather. We look forward to seeing you soon."

A nearby Dunkin' Donuts was also closed, no sign in the window. But the French Roast on 85th and Broadway had a long line of customers snaking out the door.

Dunkin' Donuts franchisees are responsible for making the business decision to open their restaurants, a spokesman said, adding that the stores at Rockefeller Center and Penn Station were open.

Sue Chen, who owns three Dunkin' Donut stores on Long Island, where almost a million homes and businesses were powerless, was lucky enough to have power at two of her stores.

"I have to thank my manager," Chen said Tuesday from behind the counter at her store in Sea Cliff, where she was pitching in to help five employees keep up with demand. "Last night, at 2 o'clock, 3 o'clock, he came here and started to make the bagels." Chen said workers at the Sea Cliff store all live nearby, so the manager called and told them to come in.

About 250 Starbucks stores from Virginia to Maine were closed, said spokeswoman Haley Drage. "All of our New York metro stores are closed," she said, adding that the company is assessing when they can be safely reopened.

"We're trying to ensure partner safety. We don't want partners traveling if it's not safe," she said, noting that authorities in many localities had urged residents to limit traveling.

DRUGMAKERS SEEK ALTERNATIVES

Drugmakers, heavily concentrated in New York and New Jersey, were also laid low by the storm. Novartis AG said all offices in the area would remain closed Tuesday, as did top insulin maker Novo Nordisk.

GlaxoSmithKline Plc said it had implemented a continuity plan to ensure medicines would continue to be distributed, especially given the numerous airport closures still in effect. But the company also said there was sufficient inventory in the supply chain to avoid serious disruptions.

Relatively high amounts of pharmaceuticals move by air, since drugs are light and high-value items, meaning companies like GSK have to arrange road transport in the meantime.

Multiply a decision like that by a few dozen or even hundreds of companies, and Sandy could actually end up being a boon to the trucking industry despite the short-term costs of widespread road closures.

"In the long run, however, the effect is clearly positive, perhaps close to $1 billion, because resupply and rebuilding generates freight growth and because trucking is the mode of choice for time-sensitive resupply," said Noel Perry, managing director at transportation consulting firm FTR Associates.

Sandy helps push gasoline prices lower

9 hrs.

Gasoline prices are likely to keep falling after Super Storm Sandyshut down highways and air travel across the East Coast.

?We?re not going to see prices move higher because of this storm. We?re going to see prices move lower,? said Tom Kloza, oil analyst at OPIS. RBOB gasoline futures were down a half percent, at $2.62 per gallon in afternoon trading Tuesday.

?Gasoline at the pump continued to decline, with the national average for unleaded regular $3.53, a penny lower than Monday and 11 cents cheaper than a week ago.

?Kloza and others said gasoline could move higher in the short term but the dynamic favors lower prices.

??My guess is we?ll have 20 to 25 states that will have prices below where they were a year ago,? he said. ?It could be in the $3.40s (a gallon) by next week. There?s a huge swatch of the country that?s going to be get closer to $3.??

Five East Coast refineries producing gasoline were all in the path of Sandy. The Linden, N.J.-based Philips 66 refinery, one of the nation's largest, remained closed Tuesday after it was shut pre-emptively ahead of Monday?s storm. The plant did see some flooding, and it was awaiting a return of power in the next day or two. But several other refineries, which had been operating at reduced levels, were restoring operations.

(Read More:Trading Oil in the Wake of Sandy)

The refineries produce about 6.5 percent of the U.S. gasoline. Another refinery, owned by Hess, was also shut down in New Jersey, but it does not make gasoline. The Colonial pipeline, which transports gasoline to the East Coast, said it did not have flooding or operational issues at its Linden tank farm but it was waiting for power to be restored.

?The destructive storm came ashore in South Jersey on Monday, flooding shore communities, before turning northward to flood lower Manhattan, coastal New York and Long Island, and then into New England. The massive storm, which merged with another storm, impacted Maryland, Delaware and stretched into the Midwest.

?Traffic in the mid-Atlantic was halted during Monday?s storm and sharply reduced Tuesday, as cleanup and power crews worked to clear debris and restore electricity, knocked out by the dangerous storm system. Many schools and businesses were closed or operating with reduced staff, and trading activity in the stock market and bond market remained shut down Tuesday.

?Andrew Lipow, president of Lipow Oil Associates, estimates that the gasoline production losses due to Sandy would amount to about 1.5 million to 1.7 million barrels , but the demand is expected to have dropped by 2 million barrels. The cancellation of thousands of airline flights also could create a backup in jet fuel. The drop in demand in refined products also takes pressure off of crude, which has been falling.

?West Texas Intermediate was flatTuesday, up just 12 cents at $85.67 per barrel.

?This is a demand destruction event, and if you really think about it, you have an Election Daycoming up. We?re not talking about a weekend that would have seen much demand. Until you get to Thanksgiving, you have one of the softest demand seasons for gasoline,? Kloza said. ?I think WTI is probably fairly valued right now. We?re seeing a lot of weak prices that don?t trade in the futures market.?

He said heavy Canadian crude was less than $60 a barrel recently, while Bakken crude from North Dakota was $10 a barrel cheaper than WTI. Kloza said that is cheaper because of rail snags due to the storm.

Obama scraps campaign plans in pivotal Ohio

President Barack Obama with senior advisers for a briefing about the storm.ORLANDO--President Barack Obama scrapped plans to campaign Wednesday in the pivotal battleground state of Ohio and will stay in Washington, D.C., to monitor the federal government's response to the superstorm, the White House said.

On Tuesday, Obama got an update on Hurricane Sandy via teleconference in the White House's Situation Room.

"The president expressed his concern for those impacted by the storm, as well as the heroic first responders who are selflessly putting themselves in harm's way to protect members of their communities," read a statement from the White House. "He also noted his sadness over the loss of life associated with the storm so far."

Obama got an update on the storm's path, the resources deployed to respond, and heard from Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner "on conditions in financial markets and the operations of the financial system."

Overnight, Obama approved major disaster declarations for New Jersey and New York at the request of those states' governors. That freed up additional federal aid for state and local governments.

"The president told his team that their top priority is to make sure all available resources are being provided to state and local responders as quickly as possible and directed them to identify and resolve any potential bottlenecks or shortfalls should they arise," the White House also said.

Obama also directed the Department of Defense and Department of Energy to help restore power.

"The president urges Americans to continue to follow the direction and advice of local officials, Governors, and Mayors, many of whom the President will speak with later today," the statement continued.

The teleconference included many senior advisers. In the photo above, from left: John Brennan, assistant to the president for Homeland Security and Counterterrorism;Tony Blinken, national security advisor to the vice president; David Agnew, director for intergovernmental affairs; Alyssa Mastromonaco, deputy chief of staff for operations;and Chief of Staff Jack Lew.

Joining the briefing by phone were Vice President Joe Biden, Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano, FEMA Administrator Craig Fugate, Secretary of Energy Steven Chu, Transportation Secretary Ray Lahood, Defense Secretary Leon Panetta, Vice Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff James Winnefeld, USNORTHCOM Commander General Charles Jacoby, Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius, National Hurricane Center Director Dr. Rick Knabb and Geithner. Other officials also took part.

A Recipe For Disease: Food Deserts and Air Pollution | Care2 ...

On my way to a party recently, I decided at the last minute to pick up a bottle of wine and some fruit to contribute to the festivities. I was already near my destination and began to drive around looking for a grocery store. After circling several blocks with no luck, I engaged my GPS, only to discover that there were no grocery stores for miles in any direction.

I was in a?food desert!

Food Deserts and Food Swamps

And as it turns out, my hometown and state, Houston, Texas are full of them. Recently, I was introduced to the notion of?food deserts and?food swamps, and I realized instantly, the same people who are suffering the ill-effects of air pollution and poor access to health care, are also bearing the brunt of almost no access to quality, nutritious food.?Some of my city?s policy-makers are aware of this and pushing to increase food access.

A?food desert, according to Dr. Ann Barnes, Medical Director for?Weight Management Services and Disease Prevention at Harris County Hospital District, is when one third of the residents in a census tract are over one mile from a full-service supermarket or grocery store.

Food swamps are communities in which there is an overabundance of high caloric, nutrient-poor foods versus healthy foods. In Texas, the uneven distribution of supermarkets statewide has resulted in large areas of residents that go without.?Texas ranks lowest in the nation for supermarket density per population.

The shortage of supermarkets particularly impacts lower-income residents with limited resources for an adequate diet. In Houston, where 21% of the population lives below the poverty line, the poor that are disproportionately affected by the lack of supermarkets live mostly on the eastern parts of the city. It is no coincidence that these areas are the same parts of the city plagued with air pollution and unhealthy conditions.

Obesity, Asthma and Air Pollution

The?Food Trust, a national research and advocacy organization, found that studies overwhelmingly indicate that people living in?food deserts suffer disproportionately high rates of obesity and other diet-related issues. And, even though asthma is not considered a diet-related disease, high incidences of asthma appear in these communities as well. Poor diet contributes to and worsens asthma. There is a direct link between?obesity and the incidence of asthma and asthma-related mortality. According to the?Cleveland Clinic Journal of Medicine, the rise in obesity rates has paralleled the rise in asthma in recent decades. And conversely, significant weight loss has been associated with improvements in both asthma control and lung function. The higher one?s body mass index, the higher one?s risk of asthma.

Food deserts are almost always?food swamps, meaning that where they are lacking in access to wholesome groceries choices, there is an abundance of unhealthy, fast-food opportunities. Sugar, processed carbohydrates (such as candy, juice, white bread, and chips), and trans fats commonly found in fast foods contribute to the inflammatory response characteristic of triggering asthma. Recently, the?Journal of Asthma published a study of over 2,000 fifth-graders showing that the regular consumption of sweetened beverages greatly increased the children?s risk of developing asthma.

Dirty Air, Asthma and Social Justice

For the children of low-income families,?food deserts,?food swamps and air pollution conspire in their communities with a one-two-three punch that makes kids sicker, poorer-performing academically, and less physically active.?Families under siege from a barrage of factors, when the air is dirty and when there is no access to healthy, wholesome food, cannot fight alone. Those of us concerned about the health of children and the welfare of our communities must band together to insist that policy-makers support strong clean air regulations for all.

Here are some of the ways to help:

TELL WASHINGTON OUR KIDS NEED CLEAN AIR

Is Politics a religion?

Politicians usually belong to a party that has a set of principles.? These are then used as the basis for policies and each new member must agree that they are in agreement with them.? They are not factual things like being able to speak a particular language, having a level of education, living in certain locations etc - No they are principles, beliefs,? commitments, intentions etc.? I have extracted the principles for Canada's main parties:? ?Conservatives, NDP and Liberals.? (Download a short pdf for each by clicking their names).? It's immediately obvious that these principles are very similar structurally to the dogmas of Churches.? They require belief on Faith although like theology, research is done to justify each belief.? None of this would matter except that people with these dogmas run our country!? If they ignored the dogmas and decided what to do based on reason, evidence and even common sense, then it would not matter what they believed.? Some actions are like that but too many times, dogma is used as the basis for actions.

It's made even worse when dogmas from an MP's personal religion is used as the basis for an action.? This often happens when an issue is unrelated to a political dogma.? For example, gay marriage and abortion are not mentioned in the principles of any Canadian party.

The thought that politics is a form of religion is complicated by the fact that certain religions tend to? be related to political parties.? For example, Conservatives are more likely to be religious (Catholics or fundamentalists) while NDP members have a higher proportion of atheists.? But that's not what I am discussing here.

Let's think about it.? If you belong to a religion and you have a set of dogmas, then when you come to decide something that relates to one of the dogmas, it will decide for you what to do.? For example, Catholics don't think about whether to choose an abortion or not - they know not to have one.? Or at least faithful Catholics are supposed to act that way.? But politicians also have a set of dogmas - when an issue comes up for a decision, they will base their decision on their principles.? They are acting the same way as a religious person.? What they should be doing is deciding each issue on its merits using evidence and reason - not faith.

And it's not just the politicians - their supporters think like that too.? In effect, they have a religion that is what their party preaches.? They could also have a theist religion so would then have two religions - which may or may not conflict!?? Not every supporter accepts all of their party's dogma? - many choose based on the issues for each election.? That's just as well - otherwise we'd never get a change in government.

Let me highlight one "principle" for each Canadian party:

Conservative
A belief that the purpose of Canada as a nation state and its government, guided by reflective and prudent leadership, is to create a climate wherein individual initiative is rewarded, excellence is pursued, security and privacy of the individual is provided and prosperity is guaranteed by a free competitive market economy.

Liberal party
The Liberal Party of Canada is committed to the view that the dignity of each individual man and woman is the cardinal principle of democratic society and the primary purpose of all political organization and activity in such a society.

NDP
That the production and distribution of goods and services shall be directed to meeting the social and individual needs of people within a sustainable environment and economy and not to the making of profit;

So, simplistically, if an MP from each party were to be faced with a decision about the economy, a Conservative would support "a free competitive market economy", a Liberal would support "the dignity of each individual man and woman" (whatever that means) and the NDP would ensure the environment was looked after and no profit was made. In practice, few decisions on the economy can be made based only on these principles - or even all the party's principles.? Like any decision, the facts of the particular case must be known, all the options considered and the best choice made that was right for all those affected.? This requires an approach much like a scientist uses in establishing how things work.? What I'm afraid of is that politicians might use an approach used by religious? people e.g. "What does my religion (dogma) say? Let's do that."? Easy but not based on reason, logic or evidence.

Allan Gregg recently addressed Carlton University on this subject. (Text here - more from Allan in a column in the Toronto Star)? His thesis is that the Harper Government is using their Conservative dogma to make decisions and throwing reason out the window.? My view is that he is biased against Harper but that he has a point.? However, I would be very sure that other politicians would do the same - especially if they had a majority.? I think it's a problem with politicians, not just with Harper.

Viewed from Canada, the U.S. has the same problem but worse - the intransigence of both parties on the "fiscal cliff" issue is based on their ideologies (dogmas).? The solution is to stop treating politics like a religion but that's hard when Americans are so steeped in religion and see strong faith as a virtue.

Forecasters: Sandy 'one for record books'

?

Hurricane Sandy is forecasted to hit the East Coast, but as NBC's Al Roker explains, the storm may also pack a punch for many inland areas.

By NBC News staff

As Hurricane Sandy barrels toward the East Coast, forecasters?warn it?s threatening to be one of the worst storms to hit the Northeast in decades.

The storm?already killed more than 40 people in the Caribbean. Officials all along the Eastern Seaboard have declared states of emergency and meteorologists have warned residents ? both coastal and inland ? to prepare for gale-force winds, chances of flooding, heavy rain, power outages and even snow.

Here?s a look at what some weather forecasters?predict.

Al Roker, chief meteorologist for NBC's TODAY Show

?Sandy is now back up to hurricane strengths with winds now up to 75 miles per hour. As we?ve seen already, it has caused massive destruction in its path. This one looks like it?s going to be one for the record books. It?s threatening to be one of the worst storms to hit the Northeast in decades. States of emergency have already been declared across five states and D.C., and in Norfolk, Va., the Navy is sending their ships out to sea as a precautionary measure.?

Helpful hurricane gadgets and apps

The Weather Channel

Carl Parker, hurricane specialist on?The Weather Channel

"We?re really concerned about the?water level rise. Because of the size of the system has everything to do with that potential for water-level rise. When you think about (Hurricane) Charlie, for example, it was a very powerful storm; it was a very small storm, so it wasn?t blowing water over a very large section of ocean. But this storm is going to be blowing water over a huge area ? hundreds of miles ? and that?s why it?s going to really pile up the water, and why the surge could be devastating?when it finally comes on shore."

?You can see the storm moving further southward more toward south Jersey so in this case again we are piling up the water as early as late tomorrow, coming up here toward the coast of New Jersey, and towards Long Island and then as the storm moves into New Jersey we see that maximum water level rise occurring just north of the area of low pressure, and that could have serious, potentially huge impact in New York City, in particular, because of the surge potential there, so that would maximize the surge around Long Island and then down and across the Jersey Shore.?

?

Don Morelli, meteorologist with WSI, a sister company of The Weather Channel

"They?ve had quite a bit of time to prepare for this, that?s the good side of this, they have been able to trim some branches from over wires and maybe try to minimize the power outages. But still, we are talking about a wind shield with severity of several hundred miles, so we are looking for widespread power outages in?the New England area from southern Maine to central Connecticut and from areas in interior New York to the mid-Atlantic region."

Serious Sandy targets East Coast

"After the fact with all this rain and blustery wind after the main storm center comes in on Monday, Tuesday the root system of these trees are very, very loose so it won?t take much to knock off trees even after the storm makes inland so this isn?t just for Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, for the mid-Atlantic region, could even go in to mid-week, and then we are talking you know maybe a week or two of power outages for wide spread areas."

"The criteria for closing an airport is around 58, 60 miles an hour, which is easily going to be reach for much of the major hubs from D.C.? Northward to New York city and even into Logan [in Boston]." "Major delays going to be very, very widespread right through mid-week, so [it?s]not a good week to be traveling? across the Northeastern U.S."

Hurricane Tracker: Follow storm's path

?

Bill Karins, NBC Meteorologist?

"The greatest destruction is expected to occur Monday afternoon and evening as Sandy makes landfall near the New Jersey shore.?Serious and life threatening weather conditions are expected from Outer Banks to New England. The landfall window is from Long Island to Ocean City, Md., but the Jersey Shore covers 80 percent of that area so I'm expecting a New Jersey landfall. Areas of Northern Jersey, coastal New York City, Long Island and Connecticut are facing a major coastal flood threat from a possible top 5 all-time recorded storm surges."

"Lastly we are certain to be dealing with destructive weather conditions Monday and?Tuesday but Wednesday will be no walk in the park with the storm stalling near Philadelphia and then slowly drifting into New England during Halloween. This will keep periods of rain and gusty southerly winds (20-40 mph) over the hardest hit areas of New Jersey, New York City, Long Island and coastal Connecticut. All hands on deck power restoration efforts will likely not begin until Thursday."

"People in the high impact zone from Virginia to Southern New England have one day left to make preparations and plans before Sandy significantly impacts their lives. After the storm hits expect the cleanup and power outage restoration to continue right up through Election Day."

Jimmy Savile: How could his crimes go unnoticed?

FILE - This is a March 25, 2008 file photo of Sir Jimmy Savile, who for decades was a fixture on British television. A year after he died, aged 84 and honored as Sir Jimmy, several women have come forward to claim he was also a sexual predator and serial abuser of underage girls. The child abuse scandal that has enveloped the BBC, one of Britain's most respected news organizations, is now hitting one of America's, as the incoming president of The New York Times is on the defensive about his final days as head of the BBC. Mark Thompson was in charge of the BBC in late 2011 when the broadcaster shelved what would have been a bombshell investigation alleging that the late Savile was a serial sex offender. (AP) ? Jimmy Savile was one of the best-known faces on British television. So how was he able to become one of the country's worst child sex predators without ever being caught?

Since the revelations began earlier this month, it's become clear that victims raised the alarm, police were aware of the allegations and journalists suspected that something was up.

Here's a look at a few points where Savile's abuse might have been stopped.

IN THE 1960S:

When Savile was a dance hall manager in the northern England city of Leeds, his predatory behavior was already known. In a recent article published in the Mail Online, biographer Dan Davies said one of Savile's co-workers at the time joked that the entertainer "was either going to be a huge success or in prison" for having sex with 14-year-old girls.

IN 1973:

When Savile found work with the BBC, senior management became suspicious. Corporation press officer Rodney Collins said in a recent interview with the BBC that he was told by his then-boss that he had "heard things about Jimmy Savile" and underage girls. The boss asked Collins to check with his newspaper contacts; Collins got gossip, but no evidence. Collins said his journalist friends told him at the time the gossip would probably never come to light "whether true or not."

IN OR AROUND 1975:

Savile's great-niece, Caroline Robinson, told her grandmother she was sexually abused by Savile at a family party. Robinson, who was 12 at the time, was interviewed by the ITV television network earlier this week. She said her late grandmother shrugged off the abuse, telling her: "It's only Jimmy, don't worry ..."

IN THE 1980S:

A woman told London's Metropolitan Police that Jimmy Savile assaulted her inside his trailer while it was parked on BBC premises. The case was dropped due to insufficient evidence.

IN 1994:

Sunday Mirror editor Paul Connew met with two women who alleged abuse by Savile. Connew said he found their testimony compelling, but said the alleged victims were afraid of the clout of an entertainer who had rubbed shoulders with royalty and had been honored by the Vatican.

"One of them said memorably: 'Who's going to believe us in the witness box against Jimmy Savile? He's friends with Prince Charles, Princess Diana ... he's been blessed by the pope,'" Connew said. He told The Associated Press that Britain's strict defamation laws meant that he was left with little to run with. "They had to be prepared to go on the record and face what would've been an almost certain libel action from Savile," he said.

IN 2003:

A woman contacted London's Metropolitan Police to tell her that Savile touched her inappropriately in the 1970s, but she declined to press charges.

IN 2007:

Police in Surrey, in southern England, received an eyewitness report about the abuse of a girl at a children's home in the 1970s. A further investigation turned up three alleged victims of Savile. The first was a fellow resident of the children's home; the second was a girl who was allegedly assaulted at a specialist hospital in or around 1973; and the third was assaulted in southern England in 1970.

Although police questioned Savile, all three alleged victims declined to press charges and authorities dropped the case in 2009. In a statement published Thursday, chief British prosecutor Keir Starmer said there were "obvious problems" in pursuing a case where victims were reluctant to come forward, where there was no forensic evidence and where there was limited witness testimony, "particularly in relation to allegations which date back a number of years."

IN 2008:

Savile's name comes up during an investigation into abuse at a children's home on the Channel Island of Jersey. The inquiry's chief recently told the Guardian newspaper that "there definitely wasn't enough to question him at the time."

IN 2011:

Savile dies at age 84 on Oct. 29.

IN 2012:

Some 300 potential victims have come forward in the wake of the Savile revelations, according to police. Most of them say they were abused by the late BBC TV host, but some say they were abused by other people, Metropolitan Police said Friday. The force has refused to give a detailed breakdown.

NEW YORK (AP) ? A nanny suspected of killing two young children she was looking after and then stabbing herself is in critical condition in a city hospital, as authorities continue to investigate a situation that is every parent's nightmare.

The horror started for the children's mother, Marina Krim, when she and a third child returned to their apartment on Manhattan's Upper West Side Thursday evening. Puzzled by the darkened home, she returned to the lobby to ask the doorman if the nanny had gone out with 1-year-old Leo, just learning to walk, and 6-year-old Lucia, known as LuLu, lover of "all things princess."

She was told they hadn't left, so she returned upstairs. A search led to the bathroom, where the children's bodies were in the bathtub and the nanny lay wounded nearby. It's unclear how many times the children were stabbed.

"There was some kind of screaming about, 'You slit her throat!'" said music therapist Rima Starr, who lives on the same floor as the family, and said she heard screams coming from their apartment at around 5:30 p.m.

The nanny, Yoselyn Ortega, who was found near a knife, was hospitalized in critical condition and was in police custody. The children were pronounced dead at a hospital.

The children's father, CNBC digital media executive Kevin Krim, who had been away on a business trip, was met by police at the airport on his return and was given an escort to the hospital where his loved ones had gathered.

The couple's apartment building sits in one of the city's most idyllic neighborhoods, a block from Central Park, near the Museum of Natural History and blocks from Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts. The neighborhood is home to many affluent families, and seeing children accompanied by nannies is an everyday part of life there, making the idea of such violence even more disturbing to residents.

Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly said it's unclear how long the nanny had worked for the family and the police investigation was ongoing. No charges had been filed.

Starr, the neighbor, said she believed the nanny had been hired just recently.

"I met her in the elevator, the day before yesterday, and was making small talk," she said.

After police arrived, she said, the mother remained in the building's lobby, screaming hysterically and clutching her surviving child.

On a webpage devoted to a recent family wedding, the eldest of the children, Lulu, is described as loving "art projects, ballet, and all things princess." The youngest, Leo, was said to be just learning how to walk.

The family had moved to New York from San Francisco within the last few years. The children's father was named general manager of CNBC's digital media division in March, after working previously in digital media at Bloomberg. Their mother had a cooking blog and taught art classes to young children.

The family lived in a stately, late 19th-century apartment building where one three-bedroom unit currently available for rent has an asking price of $10,000 per month. They had a greyhound, retired from racing, named Babar.

Weak earnings reports weigh on stocks

Stocks were mostly lower Friday in response to weak corporate earnings reports. Tepid economic growth in the US also pushed stocks down.

Stocks?closed mostly lower Friday after investors found little to like in weak corporate earnings reports and news of only tepid growth in the U.S. economy in the third quarter.

The Dow Jones industrial average managed a gain of 3.53 points to close at 13,107.21 after spending much of the day in the red.

The Standard & Poor's 500 index fell 1.03 points to 1,411.94 and the Nasdaq composite rose 1.83 points to 2,987.95.

Stocks?rose in the morning before a mild midday sell-off, then recovered somewhat in the afternoon.

The morning gains came after the Commerce Department estimated that the U.S. economy expanded at a 2 percent annual rate from July through September. That was better than the previous quarter, and better than analysts expected, but not strong enough to bring down the unemployment rate.

Even economic data that is mixed or positive won't outweigh weak earnings, said Lawrence Creatura, a portfolio manager with Federated Investors. Reports like the one on Friday that measure gross domestic product tend to be backwards-looking, while companies are offering forecasts about the months ahead, he said.

"Company earnings trump macro data. Because investors own Apple, they don't own GDP," Creatura said.

Apple fell $5.54 to $604 after saying its profit will decline this holiday season.

Even with Friday's rise,?stocks?lost ground this week, inflecting a sort of death-by-a-thousand-cuts on the rally that began in September. The Dow was down 236.30 points for the week, or 1.8 percent. The S&P has fallen 21.25 points, or 1.5 percent.

Goodyear Tire & Rubber sank 10 percent after a steep dropoff in sales in Europe delivered a blow to its earnings. The?stock?fell $1.28 to $11.02.

The advertising conglomerate Interpublic also turned in results that fell short of analysts' forecasts, and itsstock?fell 2.5 percent, or 26 cents, to $10.29.

Amazon rose $15.32, or 7 percent, to $238.24 despite a smaller-than-expected quarterly profit and a prediction for smaller-than-expected holiday revenue.

Among other companies making big moves, cable TV provider Comcast jumped $1.20, or 3.3 percent, to $37.56 after reporting that its income more than doubled in the latest quarter. Revenue was higher than analysts were expecting, and more customers signed up for premium services like high-definition video recorders.

Varian Medical Systems jumped $8.83, or 15 percent, to $66.93, the biggest increase in the S&P 500 index. The company, which sells medical imaging equipment and radiation-emitting devices for treating tumors, reported a 20 percent rise in income because of higher sales of devices.

On its first day of trading, dairy company WhiteWave Foods lost 25 cents to $16.75, down from its initial public offering price of $17, after rising as high as $19.17 earlier.

The yield on the 10-year Treasury note fell to 1.75 percent from 1.82 percent on Thursday.

Research reveals Beluga whale that could mimic human voices (+audio)

It may sound like a whale of a tale, but it's true. Beginning in 1984, scientists in San Diego studied the sounds of a captive male Beluga whale that was able to mimic human voices.?

By Associated Press / October 22, 2012

It could be the muffled sound of singing in the shower or that sing-songy indecipherable voice from the Muppets' Swedish Chef.

Surprisingly, scientists said the audio they captured was a whale imitating people. In fact, the whale song sounded so eerily human that divers initially thought it was a human voice.

Handlers at the National Marine Mammal Foundation in San Diego heard mumbling in 1984 coming from a tank containing whales and dolphins that sounded like two people chatting far away.

It wasn't until one day, after a diver surfaced from the tank and asked, "Who told me to get out?" did researchers realize the garble came from a captive male Beluga whale. For several years, they recorded its spontaneous sounds while it was underwater and when it surfaced.

An acoustic analysis revealed the human-like sounds were several octaves lower than typical whale calls. The research was published online Monday in Current Biology.

Scientists think the whale's close proximity to people allowed it to listen to and mimic human conversation. It did so by changing the pressure in its nasal cavities. After four years of copying people, it went back to sounding like a whale, emitting high-pitched noises. It died five years ago.

Dolphins and parrots have been taught to mimic the patterns of human speech, but it's rare for an animal to do it spontaneously.

The study is not the first time a whale has sounded human. Scientists who have studied sounds of white whales in the wild sometimes heard what sounded like shouting children. Caretakers at the Vancouver Aquarium in Canada previously said they heard one of the white whales say its name.
