June OPEN HOUSE Looks at State Spending ? ?A Conversation with Jay Gonzalez, The Commonwealth?s Budget Chief?

Representative Jay Kaufman?s award winning public policy forum, ?OPEN HOUSE?, examines public sector spending in the 10th and final forum of the 17th season. The forum, ?A Conversation with Jay Gonzalez, The Commonwealth?s Budget Chief, will be held on Thursday, June 21st, from 7:00PM-8:30PM at the Historic Depot in Lexington Center (13 Depot Square in Lexington Center).

Joining Representative Kaufman is Governor Patrick?s Secretary for Administration & Finance Jay Gonzalez. Mr. Gonzalez is responsible for managing state finances, including preparation of the governor?s budget recommendation, development of a state capital budget, managing budgetary activities across state government, and developing long-term fiscal policy. He also oversees 15 state agencies that provide core administrative services in the Commonwealth, including the Department of Revenue, the administration of IT services and the management of human resources in state government.

How is the state budget prepared? What role does the Department of Revenue play in the collection of taxes and enforcement of the state tax code? Upon taking office in 1995, Rep. Kaufman sought to provide a vehicle for regularly engaging constituents in discussions of the challenges and opportunities facing our community and Commonwealth. Now in its seventeenth year, OPEN HOUSE, Rep. Kaufman?s public policy series, has addressed issues ranging from reinventing public education to gay marriage, property tax relief to campaign finance reform, the shrinking middle class to stem cell research, the nature of political leadership to the challenges of effecting fundamental change in a democracy.

In 1997, OPEN HOUSE was awarded the prestigious Beacon Award, cable television?s equivalent of an Emmy, as the nation?s best government relations series. The series was also named the best television series by Massachusetts Cable Television Commission. The OPEN HOUSE series is produced through a partnership between Representative Kaufman and LexMedia which records the forums for broadcast in Lexington, Arlington, and Woburn.
