Does solitary confinement breach the Eighth Amendment?

John McCain, probably America's most famous victim of solitary confinement, described his two years alone in a North Vietnamese cell thus: "It's an awful thing, solitary. It crushes your spirit and weakens your resistance more effectively than any other form of mistreatment."

This month, the first-ever US congressional hearing on solitary confinement considered whether the use of this technique in US prisons constitutes cruel and unusual punishment and is therefore in breach of the Eighth Amendment, as human rights advocates have long maintained.

After testimonies from prison officials, psychologists, lawyers, former prisoners and others, one thing seemed clear: McCain came through his two-year ordeal a lot more successfully than many of America's "supermax" inmates ? those in the highest security units within US prisons ? appear to.

Craig Haney, a psychologist at the University of California, Santa Cruz, who specialises in the mental health of inmates was asked to provide evidence to the US Senate subcommittee.

"For some prisoners less resilient than he, solitary confinement precipitates a descent into madness," he said. "Some smear themselves with faeces, sit catatonic in puddles of their own urine, or shriek wildly and bang their fists or heads against the walls that contain them."

At least half of all prison suicides in the US occur among the 3 to 8 per cent of the prison population who are held in solitary confinement at any one time.

Research on the effects of social isolation stretches back several decades. Recent reviews of the literature highlight a daunting range of harmful psychological consequences in prisoners held in isolation for more than 10 days. They include panic attacks, anxiety, loss of control, excessive anger, paranoia, hallucinations, depression, insomnia, self-mutilation and psychosis (Crime and Justice, vol 34, p 441 and Criminal Justice and Behavior, vol 33, p 760).

Psychologists agree the problem is worse than prison officials recognise. Various studies have found that between 22 and 45 per cent of supermax inmates suffer from serious mental illness, marked psychological symptoms, psychological breakdown or brain damage (Criminal Justice and Behavior, vol 35, p 985) ? though it is not always clear what proportion were ill before being locked up.

Moreover, there is considerable variation in the degree of suffering and how quickly victims succumb ? and how well they recover. Terry Kupers, a psychiatrist at the Wright Institute in Berkeley, California, who has served as an expert witness in several class-action lawsuits on prison conditions, says some develop serious psychological problems after a few days or weeks; others cope for months, then suddenly experience massive anxiety or paranoia. Social rehabilitation treatment can help recovery, but "the longer the solitary confinement, the more damaged the prisoner and the worse the prognosis in terms of mental health".

Why does the prolonged lack of social contact cause such acute ill-health? One theory is that humans need social interaction to maintain a sense of identity and a grasp on reality. Without it, says Kupers, they "have no way to test the reality of their fantasies, and there is a tendency towards paranoia and an inability to control the rage that mounts with each perceived insult".

Embarrassing Facebook status updates exposed

We know what you're doing - the website that exposes your ill-advised Facebook statuses.

We know what you're doing ... the website that exposes your ill-advised Facebook statuses.

Hate your boss? Hungover after a big night? Don?t head to Facebook to vent your feelings.

A new website created by a British teenager highlights the dangers of revealing private information on social networking services.

We Know What You?re Doing exposes the comprising status updates of Facebook and Foursquare users who haven?t set their accounts to private.

?I?m getting so mad right now I hate my boss Jay I hope he dies better yet I feel like killin him,? says Anastasia R, while Thomas L announces that it ?feels great to be not hungover for first Friday in ages?.

Advertisement: Story continues below

WKWYD?s search tool scours Facebook and Foursquare for key words such as "hungover" and ?cannabis? and divides the findings into four categories: ?Who wants to get fired??, ?Who?s hungover??, ?Who?s taking drugs?? and ?Who?s got a new phone number??.

The so-called ?social networking privacy experiment? is the brainchild of 18-year-old web developer Callum Haywood. The British teenager's creation is proving incredibly popular. According to Haywood?s Twitter feed, WKWYD attracted over 100,000 people in its first 27 hours.

?I created the website to make people aware of the issues that is created when they post such information on Facebook without any privacy settings enabled,? Haywood told CNN. ?The people featured on the site are most likely not aware that what they post as ?public? can be seen by absolutely anybody, and that Facebook will happily give away this information to other websites via its Graph API.?

While those featured on WKWYD may be surprised to find themselves on the site, the web developer hasn?t used any published information that users haven?t already revealed publicly.

In a post on its website, computer security site Sophos claims that there?s ?nothing slimy or hackerish? about Haywood?s experiment.

Sophos also argues that the responsibility for potentially damaging status updates lies not with Facebook, but with users. ?At the very least, people have got to start paying attention to Facebook's privacy settings.?

Social media expert Jenna Price agrees. ?You need to be really careful of your online presence because it?s your reputation,? says the University of Technology Sydney academic. ?When you go online and trash your reputation, and you do it yourself, you?ve only got yourself to blame.?

According to the University of Technology academic, the public have been given countless warnings about the dangers of failing to protect their privacy online, but many have failed to heed the warnings. To Price, WKWYD? is using humour deliver an important message. ?I think if it draws attention to complete abject stupidity that?s a good thing.?

WKWYD is not the first site to highlight the risks of oversharing online. Please Rob Me collated public check-ins from social networking services to announce when users would be away from home. Another social media aggregator, Openbook, makes it possible to search public Facebook status updates in real time.

By contrast to Please Rob Me and Openbook, WKWYD is careful not to reveal too many details about the people it features. Haywood only lists users by their first name and doesn?t link to their profiles.

There was some good news today for those who have been caught out by WKWYD. Haywood took to Twitter to announce that he will introduce a new feature tomorrow which will allow anyone featured on the site to request the removal of their post.

To avoid having your private thoughts exposed on WKWYD, Haywood recommends that users head to Facebook?s privacy setting ?and make sure Control Your default Privacy is not set to ?Public??.

pullingupstakesbook.com | The Zen of Book Marketing: 10 Ways To ...

Categories: Buddhist Practice, Conscious Living, Health and Fitness, Meditation, Mindfulness, New Age, Personal Growth, Self-Improvement, Women's, Writing - Tags: book sales, marketing, publish and sell your book, success with book sales

Are you like me?? You?ve always loved writing.? You dove into writing your book with relish, like a kid diving off the dock at summer camp.? It?s been a joy, a practice, a discipline and a relatively private exercise.

But then, the book is finished, and you?ve entered into a whole different realm.? Let?s say you?ve already crossed the publishing Rubicom?whether you are self-published or picked up by a publishing house.? You may have a PR firm behind you as well. But we all know that these days, marketing your book, ultimately falls upon your shoulders.

Marketing and sales are as far from the reclusive sanctuary of the writer, your head may spin, leaving you feeling flummoxed, conflicted, crazed, and overwhelmed.? I have certainly felt that way.? But I have both my 35 years of psychoanalytic practice and my Buddhist practice to draw on and share with you.

Harriet Wrye Enjoying One of MANY Book Signings on a Book Tour

So here are ten ways I have found to undertake book marketing without losing my center. ?They all relate to:

a)???????????? CREATING A SUPPORTIVE ENVIRONMENT TO CARRY OUT YOUR PLAN;

b)???????????? SETTING REALISTIC FINANCIAL AND TIME PARAMETERS FOR YOUR GOALS; and

c)????????????? PRACTICING MINDFULNESS THROUGHOUT.

?

1)? First, reflect deeply on your intention.? Did you write this book primarily for your own satisfaction, or did you write it with the intent of seeing it widely read?? Unless your answer is the latter, stop worrying about marketing. If you wrote it to be widely read, keep that intention in the forefront of your mind throughout the marketing journey.

2)? Second, consider your support system.? What resources do you have or can you turn to to help you establish a game plan for marketing your book? Do you have a publisher and or a PR team helping you with your game plan?? If you do, make sure the plan makes sense to you and that you are clear about being on board with it.

3)? If you do not have a professional support team, what are your own resources?? How much time and money are you comfortable with allotting to the project of book promotion?? Develop a timeline and a budget that you can live with.

4)? Whether you are on your own or have PR support, you will need a good web site; you will also need a strong social media presence.? That means in addition to your personal Facebook page, you need a page for your book and you need to attract people to like your page; you need a twitter account to draw more followers.? You will also benefit from joining discussions on Linked in groups related to your area of interest, and sharing images and updates on Pinterest.? Another great site to create a writer?s presence is Goodreads. And finally, to enhance your web page and your online presence, consider doing what you love best, WRITING?how about writing a blog!?

The entry into social media can be very daunting to those writers of us ?of a certain age? and may be the most challenging to your equanimity.?? More support to follow.

5)? Consider taking courses to support you in web design, book marketing and social media.? I took a very helpful course at my local community college on book marketing and also found a great weekend course on keeping up with social media for marketing, offered by a ?social media guru? through my local chamber of commerce. ?I also met other people in my community to create a mini support group.

6)? In addition, look for online courses that can help you with marketing.? Informally joining support groups with others who are on the same path in these contexts can help immensely in maintaining your sanity!? For example, I have found Beth Hayden (www.bloggingwithbeth) enormously supportive and helpful in creating a successful blog presence.

eters and established your support group(s), you are ready to go!? Now comes the mindfulness practice part of your journey.? Remember the intention you set at the outset?? You want to engage in marketing your book as a practice of living engaged fully in the present moment, setting aside attachments to future outcomes and worries about your performance in the past, living equanimously in the present.? This practice can be summed up with the simple but powerful mantra: ?BE HERE NOW?

8)? Make sure you frame it for yourself in a way that is fully syntonic with your personal values and ethos.? Many people find themselves very conflicted about ?selling? as if they felt they were icky snake oil salesmen at a traveling circus.? As a Buddhist practitioner devoted to ?Right Livlihood? and ?Speaking Only Truth? I had my own initial conflicts about selling my book, PULLING UP STAKES; STEPPING INTO FREEDOM (www.pullingupstakesbook.com).? But then I realized that the book itself is an act of mindfulness, it traces a journey of gaining wisdom and insight and learning how to ?let go? and live more mindfully.? So, because it is about surmounting some of life?s greatest challenges with equanimity, it is an inspiring offering. If your book is a genuine offering that you believe will benefit, illuminate, inspire and or entertain readers, and not some kind of snake oil scam, then you need to keep reminding yourself that you are offing merit not compromising your core values or behaving like a sleaze!

9)? Approach your book tour with gusto.? ?This is going to be an adventure!? I?m going to have an opportunity to talk with new people about something I really care about.? My book is my baby and I?m privileged to be able to find people interested in hearing about it!?

10) ?Engage in your daily routine at your computer doing your due diligence on your social media sites as a mindfulness practice!? Rather than seeing it as an odious chore, consider it as an opportunity for practicing mindfulness.? Pay attention to your posture, sitting comfortably, breathing consciously, communicating openly with your book?s potential audience as a privilege not a task.? Remember you are offering something of value, something from your heart and soul, it is an offering.

If you, like me, are a writer, ?of a certain age? consider that learning all these new tools is like studying Chinese?it keeps the old brain active and engaged!? Ponce de Leon, Here We Come! Practice smiling meditation sitting there at your desk.? I do.

(AP Photo/Louis Lanzano, Pool, File)

(AP) ? Plans for the brother of jailed financier Bernard Madoff to plead guilty and serve 10 years in prison raise fresh questions about the status of the investigation into the epic multibillion dollar fraud and whether other family members remain under criminal investigation.

U.S. prosecutors notified a judge and victims Wednesday that Peter Madoff will plead guilty Friday to conspiracy and falsifying records charges more than three years after his brother began serving a 150-year sentence for creating the fraudulent multibillion dollar private investment business.

Bernard Madoff claimed that he acted alone as he enticed thousands of investors over several decades to join what became the largest Ponzi scheme ever prosecuted in U.S. history.

Peter Madoff was the former chief compliance officer at the private investment arm of Bernard Madoff's business. Prosecutors say he has agreed to the criminal forfeiture of $143 billion, including all of his real estate and personal property. The $143 billion, representing the amount of money believed to have flowed through the business accounts when he was part of the multi-decade Ponzi scheme, is included in a criminal forfeiture agreement, though authorities know that his assets would only amount to tens of millions rather than billions.

Court papers signed by a federal judge in Manhattan on Wednesday show Peter Madoff, who had worked with his brother since 1965, plans to plead guilty to two criminal counts, admitting his role in a conspiracy to commit securities fraud, falsify records of an investment adviser, falsify records of a broker dealer, make false filings with the Securities and Exchange Commission, commit mail fraud and obstruct the Internal Revenue Service.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Lisa A. Baroni wrote in a letter to U.S. District Judge Laura Taylor Swain that, pursuant to a plea agreement with the government, Peter Madoff, 66, had agreed "not to seek a sentence other than 10 years' imprisonment."

Charles Spada, a lawyer for Peter Madoff, declined to comment.

Bernard Madoff, 74, is serving his prison term in Butner, N.C., after revealing in December 2008 that he cheated thousands of investors of roughly $20 billion for years, using money from new investors to pay returns to existing clients. Lawyers for a court-appointed trustee recovering money for Bernard Madoff's investors had said Peter Madoff also was the company's senior managing director.

The trustee, Irving Picard, said in court papers that Peter Madoff "failed miserably" to meet his responsibilities to monitor the company's operations and ensure its compliance with federal securities laws.

The court papers said Peter Madoff had received at least $60 million during the fraud and used fake stock trades to make large withdrawals seem justified.

Picard sought nearly $200 million from Madoff family members, claiming they used Bernard L. Madoff Investment Securities LLC as "the family piggy bank" to pay for vacation homes, cars, boats and even a stake in a beauty parlor.

Picard's pending lawsuit alleges that over the years, Peter Madoff, his daughter and his nephews "withdrew millions more than they invested" in private investment accounts they had with the firm.

Peter Madoff "ignored obvious red flags that the profits reflected in account statements could not have been earned legitimately, to the detriment of BLMIS and its other customers," the lawsuit says.

Bernard Madoff's relatives have said they did not know about his Ponzi scheme. His brother's plea raises new questions about the status of the prosecution and whether other family members are being targeted by the government.

Lawyers for Andrew Madoff, a son of Bernard Madoff, and Shana Madoff, Peter Madoff's daughter, did not immediately return messages for comment. A lawyer for Bernard Madoff's wife, Ruth, did not immediately return a message seeking comment. Mark Madoff, Bernard Madoff's other son, committed suicide in December 2010 on the second anniversary of his father's arrest.

Six former employees and associates have pleaded guilty and are cooperating. Five others, including Madoff's former operating chief, have pleaded not guilty and appear headed to trial.

Picard has accused Andrew Madoff of living a high-end lifestyle after receiving more than $60 million, including $31 million in salary and bonuses, from 2001 to 2008.

Shana Madoff, a lawyer, had worked at Madoff's investment business since 1995 as compliance counsel and in-house counsel. Picard's civil lawsuit said that "she ignored every red flag of the massive fraud taking place right in front of her."

The huge scheme, run since at least the early 1990s, demolished the life savings of thousands of people, wrecked charities and shook confidence in the U.S. financial system. When Bernard Madoff pleaded guilty, he insisted that he acted alone, describing a separate wholesale stock-trading firm run by his sons and brother as honest and legitimate.

So far, Picard's office has reached agreements to recover approximately $9.1 billion and has distributed more than $1.1 billion to Madoff's victims.

In a statement Wednesday, Picard's spokeswoman, Amanda Remus, said the trustee and his lawyers are aware of the letter to the court about the anticipated guilty plea proceeding involving Peter Madoff but had no comment.

Syria violence escalates as US seeks turning point

BEIRUT (AP) ? Gunmen attacked a pro-government TV station Wednesday near the Syrian capital, killing seven employees in the latest barrage of violence as world powers prepared for a high-level meeting that the U.S. hopes will be a turning point in the crisis.

Invitations to Saturday's gathering in Geneva were sent by special envoy Kofi Annan to the five permanent members of the U.N. Security Council ? including Syrian allies Russia and China ? but not to major regional players Iran and Saudi Arabia.

The absence of those two countries, as well as the lack of any appetite for international military intervention, could make it difficult for the group to find the leverage to end the bloodshed in Syria. An effort by Annan to broker a peace plan failed earlier this year.

Diplomatic hopes have rested on Russia ? Syria's most important ally and protector ? agreeing on a transition plan that would end the Assad family dynasty, which has ruled Syria for more than four decades. But Moscow has rejected efforts by outside forces to end the conflict or any plan to force regime change in Damascus.

The United Nations said Wednesday that the conflict, which began in March 2011 as part of the Arab Spring that swept aside entrenched leaders across the region, is descending into sectarian warfare.

President Bashar Assad has so far appeared largely impervious to world pressure and he has warned the international community from meddling in the crisis, which has seen a sharp escalation in violence in recent months. He said this week that his country is in "a genuine state of war," an increasingly common refrain from the Syrian leader.

Assad denies there is any popular will behind the uprising, which is in its 16th month, saying terrorists are driving a foreign conspiracy to destroy the country. Activists say more than 14,000 people have been killed in the violence.

An Associated Press photographer said the attack on the Al-Ikhbariya TV station in the town of Drousha, about 20 kilometers (14 miles) south of the capital Damascus, left bloodstains on the ground and bullet holes in the walls. The attack heavily damaged five portable buildings used for offices and studios.

Al-Ikhbariya is privately owned but strongly supports the regime.

"What happened today is a massacre," Information Minister Omran al-Zoebi told reporters. He blamed terrorists ? the same term the government uses for rebels.

The rebels deny they target the media. Activists blamed the attack on elite Syrian troops who defected from the regime Tuesday. The allegation could not be independently confirmed.

Several other staff members of the TV station were wounded in the attack, which happened just before 4 a.m., an employee said. He added that the gunmen kidnapped him along with several station guards. He was released but the guards were not.

The employee, who did not give his name for fear of retribution, said the gunmen drove him about 200 meters (yards) away and he then heard an explosion from the station.

"I was terrified when they blindfolded me and took me away," the man said by telephone.

Hours after the attack, the station was still on the air, broadcasting news of a rally in a Damascus square by people protesting the raid.

Earlier this month, two Al-Ikhbariya employees were shot and seriously wounded by gunmen in the northwestern town of Haffa while covering clashes between government troops and insurgents.

Much of the violence that has gripped Syria in the uprising has been sanctioned by the government to crush dissent. But rebel fighters are launching increasingly deadly attacks on regime targets, and several massive suicide attacks this year suggest al-Qaida or other extremists are joining the fray.

On Wednesday, the U.N. gave a grim assessment of the crisis, saying the violence has worsened since April, when the cease-fire brokered by Annan was supposed to go into effect. There also were signs the bloodshed is descending into sectarian warfare.

"Where previously victims were targeted on the basis of their being pro- or anti-government, the Commission of Inquiry has recorded a growing number of incidents where victims appear to have been targeted because of their religious affiliation," a panel of U.N.-appointed human rights experts said in a report released in Geneva.

Sectarian warfare is one of the most dire scenarios in Syria, which for decades managed to ward off the kind of bloodshed that has long bedeviled Iraq and Lebanon.

Sunnis make up most of Syria's 22 million people, as well as the backbone of the opposition. But the Assads and the ruling elite belong to the tiny Alawite sect, an offshoot of Shiite Islam, which has bred deep resentments.

Several notorious attacks during the uprising appeared to have sectarian overtones ? including the Houla massacre in May, when more than 100 people were killed in a collection of villages in central Syria.

Paulo Sergio Pinheiro, who heads a U.N. panel conducting an international investigation of allegations of human rights abuses in Syria, called the country a "crime scene."

He said the probe into the Houla massacre concluded that forces loyal to the regime "may have been responsible" for many of the deaths. Investigators have said pro-regime, Alawite gunmen known as shabiha were believed to be responsible for at least some of the killings.

Houla leans toward the opposition, and most of the victims were women and children who were slain in their homes, the report said.

"The manner in which these killings took place resembles those previously and repeatedly documented to have been committed by the government," Pinheiro told the U.N.'s top human rights body in Geneva.

A final position on who was responsible for the massacre would require more work, Pinheiro said. But he said interviews conducted by the commission "indicated that government forces and shabiha have committed acts of sexual violence against men, women and children."

The U.N.'s deputy envoy for Syria, Jean-Marie Guehenno, told the Human Rights Council that the violence has "reached or even surpassed" levels seen before the April 12 cease-fire.

Fayssal al-Hamwi, the Syrian ambassador in Geneva, said the allegations against the government are "quite fantastic." Calling the council meeting blatantly political, he said he no longer wished to participate and strode out in protest.

U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton said she has "great hope" that the Geneva meeting can be a turning point in the crisis.

Annan "has developed his own very concrete road map for political transition" from the Assad regime, Clinton said. "We believe it embodies the principles needed for any political transition in Syria that could lead to a peaceful, democratic and representative outcome reflecting the will of the Syrian people."

Annan, who represents the U.N. and the Arab League, said he sent invitations to Britain, China, France, Russia and the United States ? plus Turkey, Iraq, Kuwait and Qatar, and the European Union.

The absence of Iran and Saudi Arabia is significant because they support opposing sides of the conflict. Iran is one of the regime's top allies, and Saudi Arabia backs Syria's opposition. Annan gave no reason for not including the countries, although the U.S. has been adamantly opposed to Iran taking part.

Iran's U.N. ambassador, Mohammad Khazaee, said the way to resolve the Syrian crisis is "cooperation among everybody, especially the major players in the region, based on a fair approach on the issue."

Russia, which along with China has twice protected Assad's regime from U.N. sanctions and continued to provide it with weapons, has argued that the West should raise pressure on the Syrian opposition to sit down for talks with the government. Moscow has argued that the Syrians themselves must determine the country's future and warned that it would firmly oppose any document urging Assad to step down.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has said the Geneva meeting "should be aimed at mobilizing resources that foreign players have to create conditions needed to start an all-Syrian political process, not to predetermine its direction." He warned against using the conference to "justify any future unilateral actions."

The meeting comes also at a time of regional tensions. Syria shot down a Turkish military plane last week, saying it violated Syrian airspace.

Turkey denies that, but both sides have appeared keen to avoid escalating the matter. On Wednesday, al-Zoebi, the Syrian information minister, told Turkish TV that Syrian forces may have mistaken the plane for an Israeli aircraft. Syria and Israel are enemies.

A makeshift memorial was set up near the site in Portland, Tex., where a couple found Mollie Judith Olgin, 19, and Mary Kristene Chapa, 18, after they were shot last week.

Updated at 6:45 p.m. ET: The father of a young woman who was shot along with her girlfriend last week in a South Texas park is mourning the loss of his ?guardian angel,? telling a local television station that ?justice will be served? in the case.

Mario Olgin?s daughter, Mollie, 19, and her girlfriend, Mary Kristene Chapa, were found in a grassy area of the park by a couple Saturday morning with gunshot wounds to the head, Portland, Texas, Police Chief Randy Wright has said. Olgin, originally from nearby Ingleside but recently living in Corpus Christi, died; Chapa, of Sinton, was rushed to an area hospital where she is making an ?amazing? recovery in the intensive care unit, her brother told NBC Latino.

The couple had planned to spend some time in the park before going to see a movie, Olgin told kiiitv.com on Tuesday. When his daughter, a first-year college student who wanted to become a psychologist, didn?t show up for work on Saturday, Olgin said he knew something was wrong.

?It was not like Mollie. ? If she had some place to be she was going to be there,? he said. ?I immediately had bad feelings (about) it.?

Wright said police had recovered a bullet casing from a large-caliber gun at the scene, leading investigators to believe the shootings occurred where the pair was found, but they haven?t found the weapon. Two witnesses said they heard what could have been gunshots or firecrackers just before midnight last Friday but did not report it at the time, he said.

A motive had not been established, he said in the statement.

"Information from family and friends indicates that Mollie and Mary were engaged in a same-sex relationship. However, there is no current evidence to indicate the attacks were motivated by that relationship," he said.

Wright told msnbc.com on Monday that: ?It appears as if ? this was not just a random attack but that?s something that we really have to develop over time.?

Police are investigating the shooting of two teenage girls in a same-sex relationship in a small Texas community along the Gulf of Mexico. KRIS reporter Lindsay Curtis has the story.

Because of her medical condition, Chapa has not been formally interviewed about what happened, he said.

Chapa?s brother, Hilario, said that his sister was making physical progress on the right side of her body but doctors were awaiting a response from the left. She was able to communicate via sign language.

?The doctors say it?s too early, no one is using the word ?paralyzed,?? he told NBC Latino. ?They say we should be so happy with her progress after three or four days. She?s very strong. She survived a very tough ordeal but her recovery is coming in strides and ?impressing everybody.?

He was hesitant to share many details about the search for a suspect.

?We don?t know who did this to her, she hasn?t given us a name,? he said. ?We?re under the impression she doesn?t know who did it. We don?t know if it?s a hate crime.?

The Texas Rangers have joined the investigation, which is being led by the Portland Police.

?We offered our assistance and they accepted and we have been actively involved in the investigation since Sunday," Tom Vinger, spokesman for Texas Department of Public Safety, wrote to msnbc.com in an email.

The park, a nature area with some parts overgrown and no lights, was often frequented by visitors during the day, but not at night. It is located along a bluff overlooking a bay, Wright said, with some homes situated nearby.

Rainbow ribbons, messages, flowers and cut-out hearts were left near the site in Portland, Tex., where a couple found Mollie Judith Olgin, 19, and Mary Kristene Chapa, 18, after they were shot.

?We?re not really sure how they got to the point that they were found,? he said. ?It is a scenic overlook with a wooden deck and there is a place at the edge of the deck where you can actually go down a very steep incline into a grassy area that leads down to the shoreline, and that?s where they were found.?

The crime rate is low in Portland, north of Corpus Christi on the Gulf of Mexico, Wright said. The last homicide occurred two years ago.

The couple?s friends and well-wishers placed rainbow ribbons, goodbye messages, flowers and cut-out hearts on Sunday around the site where Olgin and Chapa were found. On Friday, a candlelight vigil and walk will be held for them.

Frank Reyna, a 19-year-old university student, said he grew up with Chapa and met Olgin his sophomore year of high school. He described Chapa as an athlete who played softball, and said Olgin, a student at a nearby university, was focused on academics but also was a big joker. He last saw them together at a local coffee shop in May, which was the first time he saw them out as a couple.

?It?s something that I think all of us are going to carry with us for a while,? Reyna told msnbc.com. ?It?s going to take a while to get past this, the idea that there is somebody still out there that did this to these two amazing, beautiful people, and that they?re walking free right now.?

Friends said the pair had been together since mid-February.

The couple?s relationship ?was a readily accepted thing,? Reyna added, and was not what their friends focused on.

?We focused on their personalities and how they got along with everybody else ? their kindheartedness and their ability to just make other people smile and make each other smile,? he said. ?We didn?t care ? what they were, it?s who they were.?

Jillian Manuel, 20, who used to work with Olgin, said it was hard to return to the park on the weekend knowing what had happened there. She went to help create the makeshift memorial, where friends shared stories and tears, and to check the scene, where she recalled the difficulty of watching Olgin?s car get towed.

?We?re ? hoping to kind of just remember Molly, remember her and just share our memories,? Manuel said of their planned vigil. ?And then ? send off prayers for Christine and just celebrate them.?

The family will hold a memorial on Friday before the candlelight vigil and walk. Olgin welcomed the outpouring of support in the wake of his daughter?s death.

?She was happy,? he told kiiitv.com. ?She didn?t need for her life to end the way it did. Justice will be served.?

This Tropical Isle of Bali is located along the western area of Lombok, divided by Lombok Strait within the two. Each share loads in common since they are the preferred tourist destinations in the area with yearly records of over one million global customers each. Geographically, the two island destinations are typically circular and even depend upon another for the travel and leisure and trade industrial sectors. Getting around right from Gili Islands serves the local people and is an enhancement towards their economies. The method of travel market amongst the 2 island destinations is extremely different, using air and even water becoming the most common ways.
By Air

Airline choices feature Garuda Airline carriers, Merpati Airlines, Trans Nusa Air and Wings air with over two flights connecting Bali and Lombok, all under Twenty minutes. World-wide airline carriers incorporating Silk Air, Garuda as well as Merpati can provide regular trips into Lombok International Airport, which has full visa care on entrance that has quick but efficient management.
By Sea

That connects towards Lembar harbour in Lombok which happens to be about 4 to 5 hours through Bali when you are crossing through sea. Regular schedules for public ferry boats display a travel every 120 minutes right from Padang Bai harbour and also Lembar harbor. This may cost you Rp. 36,000 for each person. The physical conditions for this ferries may bring up concern based on basic safety, transport worthiness as well as amounts of wear and tear.
Fast boats have become the most frequent professional for the sea transportation companies plus the number of fast boats also express boats operating between the two island destinations has noticed a growth in the last few years because of increase in amount of travellers venturing. The Scoot Cruise, the Gili Cat, an Australian owned fast boat, the Blue Water Express working under Blue Water Safaris and the Island Getaway are several of the well-known names in the fast boat enterprise. This specific way of transport is more expensive as compared to ferry boats, though the budget is important considering the safety precautions received as well as comfort, privacy and style are quite spectacular.

Whichever mode you choose, safety comes first. Time is also of the essence and you can also look out for special offers including the Blue Water Express special offer available on their website at www.bluewater-express.com

(AP) ? Queen Elizabeth II prayed together Tuesday with Catholic and Protestant leaders from across Northern Ireland as this long-divided land demonstrated its rising faith in a shared future ? and braced for a peacemaking milestone that has been a quarter-century in the making.

The British monarch visited the lakeside town of Enniskillen, scene of one of the Irish Republican Army's most shocking atrocities, for events symbolizing how far Northern Ireland has come from its darkest days of bloodshed. On Wednesday she's expected to meet and shake hands with Martin McGuinness, former commander of the dominant Provisional IRA faction, in what many see as the symbolic conclusion to a four-decade conflict.

Their first-ever contact, long avoided by McGuinness' Irish nationalist party Sinn Fein, follows the Provisional IRA's killing of some 1,775 people since 1970, including the queen's own cousin Lord Louis Mountbatten ? a 1979 assassination that IRA experts say McGuinness himself sanctioned. McGuinness today is the senior Catholic in Northern Ireland's unity government, an institution forged following the Provisionals' 2005 decision to renounce violence and disarm.

Yet the political difficulties that McGuinness faces are writ large on the Northern Ireland landscape. Catholics and Protestants alike are suddenly ribbing him, if not to his face, as "Sir Martin of Londonderry" ? a tongue-in-cheek reference to his home city, because virtually all Irish nationalists reject that British name and use its native Irish name of Derry. Many Protestant leaders and analysts likewise have asserted, triumphantly, that the peace process has left McGuinness with no choice but to bend the knee to the British monarch.

"If Martin McGuinness is to be the deputy first minister of Northern Ireland, he needs to recognize that her majesty is head of state of the United Kingdom," said Jeffrey Donaldson, a lawmaker from the main Protestant party, the Democratic Unionists, which today runs Northern Ireland in an odd but surprisingly stable coalition with Sinn Fein.

"Other than moving into Buckingham Palace and curling up like an old green corgi at the foot of the queen's bed, I'm not sure how much more Sinn Fein could do to indicate that their war has been lost and the surrender terms penned by the British," said Belfast commentator Alex Kane, a former Protestant political activist.

More troublingly, supporters of small IRA groups that still mount occasional shootings and bombings in Northern Ireland have daubed walls in McGuinness' home city with slogans denouncing Sinn Fein as "sellouts."

And overnight, the hillside overlooking Sinn Fein's other principal power base, Catholic west Belfast, was decorated with a massive Irish flag and the slogan "Erin (Ireland) is our Queen." Protestant militants stormed the hill Tuesday night, vandalized it and assaulted one of the Irish nationalist hard-liners guarding it. Police said the man's injuries weren't life-threatening. A police helicopter hovered overhead, using a spotlight to keep tabs on the two rival groups.

Fears that a future IRA might rise out of alienated Catholic districts were nowhere to be heard Tuesday in Enniskillen as the queen arrived in a 10-car motorcade for an ecumenical church service in honor of her 60th anniversary on the throne. Sinn Fein members stayed away from the event.

She and her husband Prince Philip received a standing ovation as she visited the town's Catholic cathedral, her first visit to a Catholic church in her 20 visits to Northern Ireland as queen. And in the neighboring Protestant cathedral, a veritable who's who of Northern Ireland religious life and politics gathered to pray for continued peace. Church leaders praised the contribution of Elizabeth, who last year made her first tour of the Republic of Ireland to broad public support. Sinn Fein was heavily criticized for boycotting her visit.

Archbishop Alan Harper, leader of the Anglican-affiliated Church of Ireland, said in his sermon that the queen's tour of the Irish Republic "was an occasion of profound significance and deep emotion" that signaled an era of genuine peace "perhaps for the first time ever in the recorded history of this island."

The queen greeted some of the thousands of locals who had spent hours standing on the packed, narrow sidewalks of Enniskillen's Church Street. In a private meeting at a Protestant clergyman's home, she met survivors of the Provisional IRA's bomb attack on the town 25 years ago.

The no-warning bomb exploded during an annual ceremony honoring the British dead of both world wars, and its victims were all Protestant civilians: 11 dead and 63 wounded, among them an Enniskillen school principal who never recovered from a coma. Worldwide revulsion over the callousness of the slaughter spurred IRA leaders, particularly McGuinness, to begin sounding out British government and intelligence officials for the terms of an IRA cease-fire.

"Today brings back some terrible memories, to be sure, but above all it shows us that the Enniskillen victims have not been forgotten," said Stephen Gault after meeting the queen. He was wounded in the 1987 blast while his 49-year-old father Sam was killed.

"She's a total lady. We were nervous, but she made us feel at ease," Gault said of the queen.

Despite the continuing threat from small IRA factions clinging to the aim of forcing Northern Ireland out of the UK, organizers of the queen's trip announced it weeks in advance, a radical departure from a decades-old policy requiring a media blackout until her arrival. Police in flak jackets did line Church Street but faced not a word of protest or any sign of trouble.

McGuinness, whom British and Irish officials say was a Provisional IRA commander from 1971 to 2005 when the outlawed group effectively went out of business, is dogged by questions over his insistence that he quit the Provisionals way back in 1974 after he was convicted of membership in the outlawed group.

Experts on Irish republicanism universally dismiss his claim as a lie designed to protect him from potential criminal prosecution or lawsuits by victims. The Provisional IRA's most high-profile victim was Mountbatten, Prince Philip's uncle. The 79-year-old World War II hero had defied police warnings and kept holidaying at his Irish castle each summer. The IRA blew up his yacht as it left harbor, killing him and three others, including his 14-year-old grandson and a 15-year-old schoolboy from Enniskillen.

Ed Moloney, an expert on Irish republicanism who wrote the definitive 2002 account "A Secret History of the IRA," said McGuinness was the Provisional IRA's chief of staff at the time and "gave the order for him (Mountbatten) to be killed."

"The top IRA general on Aug. 27th, 1979, was Martin McGuinness. Without his say-so, Mountbatten would probably have lived for many years more," Moloney wrote on his blog Tuesday.

"While much of the media coverage has dwelt on the significance of the handshake from the point of view of Sinn Fein, the person who has actually made the greatest concession here is surely the queen," Moloney wrote. "Ask yourself this question: If you were asked to shake the hand of the man who killed your favorite uncle, would you do it?"

A Nation Of Meat Eaters: See How It All Adds Up

As Allison Aubrey and Dan Charles reported today on Morning Edition, meat has more of an impact on the environment than any other food we eat. That's because livestock require so much more food, water, land, and energy than plants to raise and transport. (Listen to the audio above for their conversation with Morning Edition's Linda Wertheimer.)

Take a look here at what goes into just one quarter-pound of hamburger meat. (Mobile users: To see the images, scroll down to the bottom of the page and click on "View Non-Mobile Version Of This Story.")

And that's not even including the animal's waste or the methane emissions from its digestion.

But there are fewer cows around than there were in the 1970s.

Cattle inventory, in millions

In the meantime, though, farmers and scientists have found ways to get more meat out of every cow. So even though cattle inventory has dropped, the U.S. is still producing more beef now than in the 1970s.

Average dressed weight of cattle (what's used for meat), in pounds

And if you look at the last century, meat consumption overall in the U.S. has risen dramatically. It's only in the last few years that it has begun to drop a bit.

U.S. total meat consumption, in billion pounds

Though meat consumption in the U.S. has dropped off slightly in recent years, at 270.7 pounds per person a year, we still eat more meat per person here than in almost any other country on the planet. Only the Luxumbourgers eat more meat than we do.

As U.S. beef consumption began to decline in the 1970s, poultry began to rise quickly. A couple of years ago, chicken surpassed beef as our no. 1 meat of choice. Our consumption of pork has also risen slightly over the years.

Wildfires worsen in Colorado, 32,000 flee homes

COLORADO SPRINGS (Reuters) - A wildfire raging near some of Colorado's most popular tourist sites worsened on Tuesday, forcing 32,000 people from their homes, prompting evacuations from the U.S. Air Force Academy and swallowing numerous houses at the edge of Colorado Springs.

From the vantage point of a command post about 10 miles from the path of advancing flames, the entire community of Mountain Shadows, a northwest subdivision, appeared to be enveloped in an orange glow after dark.

"This is a fire of epic proportions," Colorado Springs Fire Chief Rich Brown said as ash drifted down on the city and the thick smell of smoke permeated the air.

Colorado Governor John Hickenlooper flew into the city Tuesday night by helicopter to meet with fire commanders and tour the fire zone first-hand. He noted that the blaze was one of at least a dozen wildfires burning throughout the state.

"This is the worst fire season in the history of Colorado," he said during an impromptu news conference, adding that from the air he saw many homes destroyed in a glowing landscape that looked "surreal."

The Waldo Canyon Fire, which has roared through at least 6,200 acres of dry timber since Saturday, has grabbed attention for days because of its proximity to landmarks like the famed mountaintop of Pikes Peak and the Air Force Academy.

The blaze claimed its first property losses on Tuesday as wind-driven flames swept over containment lines into Colorado's second-most populous city, consuming an unknown number of homes on the town's outskirts as authorities hurried to evacuate residents.

El Paso County Sheriff Terry Maketa said 32,000 people had been evacuated, and an Air Force Academy spokesman said the evacuation zone included two communities of single-family homes on academy grounds housing civilian and military personnel and their families.

"We are in a very critical situation now. Unfortunately we do have structures and homes that are burning in the northwest corner of Colorado Springs. We have mandatory evacuation over a considerable area," fire information officer Rob Deyerberg told Reuters.

A mushroom cloud of gray, black and brown smoke, topped by billowing, white cumulus clouds, rose nearly 20,000 feet into the sky and hung over the area as residents scrambled to heed evacuation orders.

The sudden closure of service stations along with other businesses, leaving fleeing motorists unable to fill up their cars, added to a sense of urgency as roads filled with traffic.

Closer to the blaze, which has been fanned by winds blowing into the southern Rockies from the prairies to the east, trees were visibly twisting from the heat of the flames.

"It's a very hostile environment out there," fire information officer Anne Rys-Sikora said.

Asked how quickly the fire was spreading after the latest flare-up on Tuesday afternoon, incident commander Rich Harvey said, "If I gave acreage right now, it would be wrong in five minutes. It's growing."

DEATH IN UTAH

Still, the Waldo Canyon Fire, burning primarily within the Pike National Forest on the western fringe of Colorado City, was dwarfed in size by wildfires elsewhere across the state, and by a fatal blaze that flared with renewed intensity in Utah.

Authorities said on Tuesday a body was found in the ashes the fast-moving Wood Hollow Fire about 100 miles south of Salt Lake City, marking the first fatality in a blaze that has scorched over 39,000 acres of rolling hills covered by parched cheat grass and sagebrush.

Flames fanned by high winds into a second county forced the closure of Utah's state Route 89 for a second time and prompted the evacuation of the entire town Fairview, a community of more than 1,200 residents according to the latest census, state emergency managers said.

The blaze already has leveled an estimated 30 homes and killed 75 sheep, authorities said.

The Wood Hollow Fire is believed to be one of just two western wildfires that have claimed lives in recent weeks.

The other is the High Park Fire near Fort Collins, Colorado, south of Denver, which now ranks as that state's second-largest blaze on record and its most destructive ever, having consumed 87,250 acres in steep mountain canyons since it was sparked by lightning two weeks ago.

The High Park has destroyed 248 homes and killed a 62-year-old grandmother, whose body was found in the ashes of her cabin, while leaving an estimated 4,300 residents displaced by evacuations.

Colorado accounts for several of the 29 large active wildfires being fought across the country on Tuesday. The bulk of them were in seven western states -- Colorado, Utah, Wyoming, Montana, New Mexico, Arizona and California, the National Interagency Fire Center in Boise, Idaho, reported.

Although federal authorities say the fire season got off to an early start this summer in parts of the northern Rockies, the number of fires and acreage burned nationwide is still below the 10-year average for this time of year, according to fire agency records.

Generation X Estate Planning

MoneyIt is important to remember that estate planning is not just for the elderly or those who are wealthy. Any person could benefit from taking the time to establish a plan should that person become incapacitated?or die prematurely, especially if that person has children. What most people probably do not understand is that estate planning does not have to be a complicated process. In fact, most members of generation X will probably only need a few basic documents, such as a will, trust, power of attorney, and a health care proxy.

A will is needed because it provides an overview of how a person wants his or her property distributed at death. Wills are also important because a person can nominate a person to become a guardian for his or her children within a will. A person could also create a revocable trust if a person does want to draft a will. A trust is a relationship that is established by a trust instrument, and it holds assets for a person's benefit while that person is alive. In addition, a trust can be established to distribute assets to a designated person after the settlor, the person who established the trust, or a beneficiary dies. Unlike a will, the property within the trust will not pass through the probate process. A health care proxy is important because it establishes what person the creator wants to make health care decisions should that person become unable to make those decisions for themselves. A power of attorney is important because it establishes the person that the creator of the instrument wants to make financial decision on his or her behalf should that person become incapacitated.
