Hey everyone this is a roleplay I made that takes one of my old ones and adds a bit of a twist to it. Basically, two time travelers go back to prevent a future where they are the end of humanity and their own race, the Starlings. If you want to check it out, it goes a bit more into detail on the intro but I want to keep it where the players dictate a lot of the twists in the plot. I hope you're interested!

Characterizing the diverse human microbiome may someday help us avoid disease and boost health

The microbes that inhabit our bodies are intimately involved in human health and disease yet we still know relatively little about them. A new major census of these tiny symbionts has revealed that they are an even more diverse bunch than was once presumed.

We have long focused on single bacteria as sources of disease (E. coli or streptococcus, for example). But we have now been learning that, for the most part, these trillions of microbes that make their homes in and on us do an excellent job keeping us healthy (crowding out harmful microbes) and sated (breaking down a lot of the food we ingest).

Now that disturbances in this rich microbiome community have been linked to weight gain, inflammatory bowel disease, vaginal infections and risk for infection with harmful microbes (such as methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, or MRSA), the importance of understanding what makes up a "healthy" microbiome has become even more apparent.

We have been adding names to the attendee list for years, but scientists still do not have a full rundown of all of the bacteria, where they live in our bodies and their role in health and disease. "We need a reference to say what is normal before we can say what is abnormal," Eric Green, director of the National Human Genome Research Institute, said in a press briefing Wednesday.

Green and his colleagues at the Human Microbiome Project have taken a big step forward in charting this complex territory, publishing an extensive new survey of the microbial profiles of hundreds of individuals. The findings are described in two papers and an essay online June 13 in Nature and in more than a dozen papers in PLoS ONE. (Scientific American is part of Nature Publishing Group.) The findings only reinforce the suspicion that this invisible landscape is even more nuanced?and important?than we thought. For example, each person might carry around hundreds of thousands of species. These bugs bring with them some eight million different genes, which far outshines our own paltry 22,000.

"This is really a new vista on biology," Phillip Tarr, director of pediatric gastroenterology and nutrition at Washington University School of Medicine in Saint Louis and a collaborator on the research, said in the press briefing. "It opens up many opportunities to improve the health of our population."

To get their results, the team collected samples from 242 healthy adults aged 18 to 40 living in Houston or Saint Louis. From each person, researchers sampled 15 to 18 specific "habitats" (nine from the mouth, four from the skin, one from the nose and three from the female genitals) as well as from stool samples.

"Healthy humans carry a remarkable diversity of organisms," says Bruce Birren, director of the Genomic Sequencing Center for Infectious Diseases at the Broad Institute and study collaborator, said at the briefing. The oral and fecal samples had the highest microbe diversity, whereas the vaginal samples had the lowest.

Each person had a relatively different microbiome, reinforcing the notion that there is no single "healthy" microbiome profile. "Apparently there are many different ways to be healthy when it comes to our microbes," Birren said. The group found that even with so many different microbial communities at each location, the same metabolic functions seem to be getting done. Birren likens it to a potluck dinner, where everyone brings something different to the table so everyone gets to eat.

Giants, Coughlin unhappy with Patriots grabbing TE

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) ? Tom Coughlin was in no mood to be noble toward the New England Patriots for plucking injured tight end Jake Ballard off the waiver wire.

Ballard, coming off ACL and micro-fracture surgery and likely unavailable for action until 2013, was claimed shortly before Tuesday's opening workout of Giants minicamp, a day after he was waived because of a failed physical. It was the Giants' intention to re-sign him and eventually place him on injured reserve, where he would continue rehabilitation and anticipate a full recovery next season.

But the Patriots beat them to it, leaving Coughlin displeased with the entire situation on Wednesday.

"Discouraged is a minor description," Coughlin said. "Very disappointed."

When it was suggested that the Giants might just have kept their top pass-catching tight end from last season on the 90-man roster to ensure keeping his contract rights, Coughlin shot back, "Don't ask me those questions. I don't have the answer for you."

What was depicted as a "calculated risk" by New England in taking a fearless tight end who caught 38 passes for 604 yards and four touchdowns last year was being viewed in some quarters as a vindictive move by Patriots coach Bill Belichick. Of course, New York defeated New England in the Super Bowl twice in the past five years, and Belichick, a former defensive coordinator for the Giants, did not get the head coaching position with New York in 1992, when Bill Parcells stepped down.

The Giants had hoped to keep Ballard around to compete with Bear Pascoe. Newly acquired Martellus Bennett, fourth-round draft pick Adrien Robinson, and first-year player Christian Hopkins are also training camp hopefuls, while Travis Beckum anticipates a return from ACL surgery in time for the regular season.

Losing Ballard proved more of an emotional shock than anything for Pascoe.

"We said there was the possibility that Jake wouldn't play this year, but it's still hard to see him go," said Pascoe, who caught 12 passes for 136 yards last year. "He was surprised, but he understands it. Jake will do well wherever he goes. He's just moving on."

Pascoe, who has taken on more of a leadership role, said the task now is for the active receivers to become effective ? not the easiest thing to accomplish while Bennett, a former Cowboy, recovers from a hamstring injury.

"I think I've built some good trust with Eli (Manning)," Pascoe said. "Right now, it's all about building on that trust. He's not worried about me. He knows I'll be in the right spot. And he knows the tight end group is solid."

The quarterback was just as optimistic.

"We have some young guys, Martellus, some new guys, who are coming into the system, so they're trying to get caught up," Manning said. "They're learning from Bear, so at least you have a guy who's been here a little bit and knows what's going on."

Coughlin would not have had Ballard for 2012, but that didn't lessen his feelings on the situation. In the end, though, he had to admit that the Patriots did nothing outside the rules, except perhaps those of front-office etiquette.

"I don't think there's any question about that part of it," Coughlin said. "Whatever the options are based on what the rules are, based on the procedural circumstance, all is fair."

Belichick, after New England's second minicamp session on Wednesday in Foxborough, Mass., wasn't concerned with etiquette.

"There are no unwrittens," he said. "You can't negotiate a contract with a player while he's under contract. You can't negotiate a contract, release him then renegotiate another contract with him that was already done in advance. I'm sure the Giants weren't doing that. (When) a player is on waivers, he's on waivers ? ours or anybody else's."

A reporter brought up the fact that Belichick was upset when the Vikings claimed tight end and long snapper Garrett Mills in similar fashion.

"I don't know what unwrittens you're talking about," Belichick said. "Anytime you put a player on waivers, you know there's 31 teams out there that can take them, if they want him. We all know that.

"There's no secrets about that."

NOTES: Giants S Tyler Sash, who had been running with the first unit, sat out drills with a bad hamstring. Coughlin said he is progressing, but that "he doesn't feel like he can fire it right now. But it's something I think he'll be ready for camp." ... The coach said he'd ideally like to have a four or five-player "committee" handling punt return duties so that WR Domenik Hixon won't have to be back there all the time. Second-round receiver Rueben Randle has looked good handling the ball, though his body position needs improvement, Coughlin said. WR Victor Cruz, WR Jerrel Jernigan, and third-round CB Jayron Holsey are also working there. ... CB Prince Amukamara continued to improve his surgically repaired left foot, but he has yet to work a full practice. ... CB Corey Webster continued to sit out with a bad hamstring as a precaution.

Mac Miller, Pharrell Making A 'Political Statement' On Pink Slime?

'That sounds tight. What the f--- is 'pink slime'?,' Miller said when Pharrell suggested the name for his EP.

During Mac Miller's recent visit to "RapFix Live," he dropped some hints about his upcoming EP Pink Slime. But now the cat's out of the bag as it's been revealed that Pharrell will co-pilot the project. MTV News caught up with Miller at the Bonnaroo Music and Arts Festival in Tennessee, where he chatted about recording with Skateboard P and dreaming up the EP's title.

The Pittsburgh rapper released the first Pink Slime single, "Onaroll," on June 5 and performed it for the first time at Bonnaroo just a few days later. Before hitting the stage, he opened up about the collaborative project, admitting that he was nervous to record with Pharrell at first.

"Pharrell is a very creative person with everything he does," Mac said, detailing one of their recording sessions. "We did this one record called 'Dreams,' and he was like, 'I'ma rap on this.' So he goes outside for 20 minutes and he just comes back, gets in the booth and raps. I don't know what he did in those 20 minutes, but he just went out and came back in with no paper, no anything, and just had a verse ready."

As far as the name of the project, that was Pharrell's brainchild as well. "It was his idea. I was at a loss for names," Mac admits. "I was on tour and I was talking to him and he's like, 'I got the name — it's Pink Slime.' I was like, 'That sounds tight. What the f--- is "pink slime"?' He's like, 'Pink slime is the fake meat they use at McDonald's,' and I was like, 'Cool, man.' "

From there, the Blue Slide Park rapper got a little bit silly about the deeper meaning in the title. "The meaning is that there is so much filth and ammonia in the world and we're just speaking on how we need to clean up the environment," he joked. "The message is ... we pay for a Big Mac, maybe give me some good beef in there. It's really a political statement we're making."

There's no confirmed release date for Pink Slime just yet.

The good news is that Italian banks, unlike Spanish ones, are in decent shape - they didn't have the same construction and real estate boom/bust as the Iberians did.? Also, the Italians can manufacture stuff - especially luxury goods - and sell them the world over without a problem, in contradistinction to Greece for example.? Also, Italy's deficit as a percentage of GDP is under the 3% allowable limit for the EZ and its new leader, Mario Monti, is strong, competent and highly respected inside his country and around the continent.

The bad news is that we're talking about one of the largest sovereign debt loads on the planet - $2 trillion or 120% debt to GDP.? The country has to sell roughly $35 billion worth of bonds each month just to keep the lights on.? Half of Italy's debt is owned by it's citizens, the other half needs foreign purchasers.? And despite the relative strength of Italian banks, the money has begun to fly north, over the Alps to Switzerland.

The risk of contagion to and from Italy is now the number one issue credit markets are focused on, especially in the wake of Spain's admission that they cannot escape without? hundred billion euros of assistance.
