Creativity and Affect | Self Improvement & Personal Growth ...

Creativity and Affect

The authors of this volume attempt to cohere the field of creativity and affect in a scholarly fashion by categorizing and characterizing some of its major features, including environmental influences; underlying processes; specific affective states; the role of atypical or pathological personalities; unconscious processes; physiological components; proactive and reactive stimuli; intrinsic motivation; eminence versus everyday creativity; and testing of assessing the affective component of creativity. The authors also examine and discuss the role that emotions, feelings and moods play in the creative process. This volume also provides a vehicle for students and psychotherapists, with which they can fully appreciate the feelings generated by the creative process and the various stages of it. How does a creator feel during its more mundane phases? Can he or she tolerate the frustration of failing and being unsuccessful most of the time? What is the real joy of achievement, success, and ultimate acceptance by ones peers in a given field? Do we have to exhibit major psychopathological features in order to achieve eminence in specific fields? What is the role of mind altering substances, mood disorders, and the like? This volume answers these questions and more. Author: Shaw, Melvin P./ Runco, Mark A./ Shaw, Melvin P. 401K's and IRA's Being Eyed by Obama Administration | Franklin ...

Obama Begins Push for New National Retirement System

A recent hearing sponsored by the Treasury and Labor Departments marked the beginning of the Obama Administration?s effort to nationalize the nation?s pension system and to eliminate private retirement accounts including IRA?s and 401k plans, NSC is warning.

The hearing, held in the Labor Department?s main auditorium, was monitored by NSC staff and featured a line up of left-wing activists including one representative of the AFL-CIO who advocated for more government regulation over private retirement accounts and even the establishment of government-sponsored annuities that would take the place of 401k plans.

?This hearing was set up to explore why Americans are not saving as much for their retirement as they could,? explains National Seniors Council National Director Robert Crone, ?However, it is clear that this is the first step towards a government takeover. It feels just like the beginning of the debate over health care and we all know how that ended up.?

A representative of the liberal Pension Rights Center, Rebecca Davis, testified that the government needs to get involved because 401k plans and IRAs are unfair to poor people. She demanded the Obama administration set up a ?government-sponsored program administered by the PBGC (the governments? Pension Benefit Guarantee Corporation).? She proclaimed that even ?private annuities are problematic.?

Such ?reforms? would effectively end private retirement accounts in America, Crone warns. ?These people want the government to require that ultimately all Americans buy these government annuities instead of saving or investing on their own. The Government could then take these trillions of dollars and redistribute it through this new national retirement system.?

Deputy Treasury Secretary J. Mark Iwry, who presided over the hearing, is a long-time critic of 401k plans because he believes they benefit the rich. He also appears to be one of the Administration?s point man on this issue.

?This whole issue is moving forward very quickly,? warns Crone. ?Already there is a bill requiring all businesses to automatically enroll their employees in IRA plans in which part of every employee?s paycheck would be automatically deducted and deposited into this account. If this passes, the government will be just one step away from being able to confiscate all these retirement accounts.?

NSC has taken the lead in warning the nation about this new government onslaught and is plotting ways to stop it.

?This effort ultimately is designed to grab the retirement nest eggs of America?s senior citizens. This new government annuity scheme, even if it is at first optional, will turn into a giant effort to redistribute the wealth of America?s older citizens,? explains Crone. ?This scheme mirrors what I expect the President will try to do with Social Security. He wants to turn that program into a welfare program, too.?

NSC will likely unveil a new grassroots campaign effort later this year or early in January to coincide with the seating of the new Congress.

Somber vigil for 'Macho' Camacho in Puerto Rico

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico (AP) ? Family and friends of former boxing champion Hector 'Macho' Camacho kept a somber vigil Friday at the hospital in Puerto Rico where he remains on life support.

Doctors in San Juan have said Camacho is clinically brain dead from a shooting earlier this week in his hometown of Bayamon. But relatives and friends told The Associated Press they are still wrestling with whether to remove him from life support.

"It is a very difficult decision, a very delicate decision," said former pro boxer Victor "Luvi" Callejas, a longtime friend, in a phone interview. "The last thing we lose is hope and faith. If there is still hope and faith, why not wait a little more?"

Camacho's oldest son, Hector Camacho Jr., told reporters his father has not been disconnected from an artificial respirator and that he believes he is still alive.

"My father is a boxer and we're going to let him fight for his life," he said. "The doctors have said a lot of things, but he is alive, he's in the fight."

Two of Camacho's sisters have asked that he remain on life support until Saturday.

Aida Camacho, one of the boxer's aunts, said in an interview that the family could decide by late Friday whether to donate his organs.

As some relatives and friends continued to pray for a miracle, condolences kept coming in for the boxer's family and preparations have begun for memorials and a funeral Mass.

Gov. Luis Fortuno said he lamented what he called a sudden loss.

"'Macho' will always be remembered for his spontaneity and charisma in and out of the ring," he said.

Also offering condolences was governor-elect Alejandro Garcia Padilla, who defeated Fortuno in November.

"The life of Macho Camacho, like other great athletes of ours, united the country," he said. "We celebrated his triumphs in the streets and we applauded him with noble sportsmanship when he didn't prevail."

Camacho was shot Tuesday night as he sat in a car with a friend, 49-year-old Adrian Mojica Moreno, who was killed in the attack. Police spokesman Alex Diaz said officers found nine small bags of cocaine in the friend's pocket, and a 10th bag open inside the car.

Police have made no arrests and continue to interview potential witnesses. Capt. Rafael Rosa told reporters Friday that they are tracking down several leads, but added that very few witnesses are cooperating. He declined to say whether police have identified any suspects.

Camacho Jr. lamented the violence that has consumed Puerto Rico, a U.S. island territory of nearly 4 million people that reported a record 1,117 homicides last year.

"Death, jail, drugs, killings," he said. "That's what the streets are now."

Camacho's sisters have said they would like to fly Camacho's body to New York and bury him there. Camacho grew up mostly in Harlem, earning the nickname the "Harlem Heckler."

He won super lightweight, lightweight and junior welterweight world titles in the 1980s and fought high-profile bouts against Felix Trinidad, Julio Cesar Chavez and Sugar Ray Leonard. Camacho knocked out Leonard in 1997, ending the former champ's final comeback attempt. Camacho had a career record of 79-6-3.

Camacho also battled drug, alcohol and other problems throughout his life. He was sentenced in 2007 to seven years in prison on burglary charges, but a judge eventually suspended all but one year of the sentence and gave Camacho probation. He wound up serving two weeks in jail, though, after violating that probation. A wife also filed domestic abuse complaints against him twice before their divorce.

Holiday Gift Guide: gaming | The Verge

It's that time of year again ? when you get to give gifts to people you love, and are obligated to give gifts to people at work you barely know. No matter who you're shopping for, we've got something perfect to get them ? check out our Holiday Gift Guide, and start checking people off your list.

It's a slightly odd time to have a gamer in your life, since two of the three major consoles appear to be only months away from a huge revision. The flood of great games never slows, though, and there are plenty of new titles to hold over even the most avid player. Plus, Nintendo's Wii U is now out, and as we found in our review the console has plenty of potential ? and it's already great, when its games take advantage of what it can do. Whether you're looking to give someone their next Halo fix or get them into a whole new way of gaming, there's plenty to buy this season.

Wii U

Price: $299.99

Nintendo is first out of the gate with the new generation of consoles, and while the Wii U isn't perfect, it definitely has the potential for some unique gaming possibilities. Core to the console's appeal is the new, tablet-like GamePad controller, which acts as both a second display and a touch screen input. Some games, like Super Mario Brothers U, let you play exclusively on the controller ? opening up the television for sportsball events and other programming. So far only a few games make smart use of the GamePad ? in particular Ubisoft's horror title ZombiU ? but, at the very least, you'll have the usual stable of solid Nintendo titles to look forward to. We recommend going with the $349.99 "deluxe set," which gets you four times the storage space of the base model as well as a copy of the mini-game collection Nintendo Land, for just a $50 premium. Seriously, don?t buy the the ?basic? model unless you really like glossy white.

Sony PlayStation Vita

Price: $249.99

Smartphones and tablets may be taking up an ever-increasing chunk of our gaming time, but for some of us there's no replacing a dedicated gaming handheld. Released at the beginning of the year, Sony's PlayStation Vita continues the PSP's quest to offer a console quality experience on the go, while adding new features like a beautiful 5-inch OLED touch screen and a rear touchpad. And now that the device has been out for nearly a year, it's managed to build up a pretty respectable library, from lengthy role playing games like Persona 4: Golden to familiar PlayStation franchises like Uncharted: Golden Abyss and LittleBigPlanet. It might not be able to do everything your iPad does, but it's definitely a great way to play games.

Neo Geo X Gold

Price: $199.99

If you're looking for something a little more retro (and a bit easier on the wallet), the Neo Geo X Gold will be here on December 6th. The system packs classic hardware onto a handheld system, giving you an arcade-like experience in the palm of your hand. It comes with 20 games pre-installed ? including arcade favorites like Fatal Fury and World Heroes Perfect ? as well as an arcade stick and a dock so you can play the games on your TV.

Stern Transformers Pin Pinball Machine

Price: $2,999.99

For the gamer who has everything, this new machine from Stern is the company's first product designed specifically for home use. This means that it's cheaper than a standard commercial machine (though still not cheap) but features the same quality parts that Stern has become known for. Meanwhile, a permanent free play mode means you won?t have to worry about keeping quarters on you ever again. You may not be able to afford a used Addams Family machine from 1992, but it?s still a helluva lot better than playing pixelated pinball on a screen.

ZombiU

Price: $59.99

New Wii U owners will likely already have staples like Nintendo Land and New Super Mario Bros. U, but for something a little different (and a lot scarier) there?s ZombiU. Not only is it a genuinely good horror game ? Polygon?s Arthur Gies said that it ?may be the most wonderfully stressful game I've ever played? in his review ? but it also makes great use of the GamePad controller. You?ll use it search through your inventory and scan bits of the environment. But while you have your eyes on the controller there?s the possibility that the undead will sneak up on you, creating a delicious bit of tension that shows what the Wii U is capable of.

Halo 4

Price: $59.99

In many ways, Halo 4 captures what made Halo 3 amazing. It?s proof that new Halo torchbearers 343 industries can make a game true to the series created by Bungie Studios. It?s arguably a very ?safe? game, in that regard ? accessible but not surprising. But that isn?t necessarily a bad thing. Halo 4 is a pick-up-and-play game for first-person shooter fans with everything that?s made Halo a multi-billion dollar franchise ? plus some new tweaks to the multiplayer and an episodic co-op campaign.

Skylanders: Giants

Price: $54.99

The Skylanders series combines two of our favorite things ? toys and games ? into an experience that?s fun no matter how old you are. The series features the addictiveness of Pokemon, only instead of capturing virtual creatures, you collect real-world action figures that can then be used in game.

Dishonored

Price: $55.04

Dishonored is much more about stealth than it is weapons. Throughout the course of the game you?ll learn new supernatural abilities to help you traverse the environment, and most importantly these abilities are actually fun to use: there are few things more satisfying than a well-timed teleport out of danger. Best of all, you?re given quite a bit of freedom to tackle missions however you want. This, combined with the game?s unique industrial setting, helps set it apart from the majority of this year?s blockbusters.

The Walking Dead

Price: $59.99

The first season of Telltale's The Walking Dead is a rare beast: a licensed game that's as good, and possibly even better than its source material. Over the course of five episodes, the series takes you on quite the zombie-filled roller coaster, but what makes the game special is the way it forces you to make choices that impact how the story plays out. People will die, and it's often because of a decision you made. The entire season is out now, and you have the option of either gifting a digital copy through Steam, or waiting for the retail version to hit the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 on December 4th.

Many more games, online

As is increasingly becoming the case, some of this year?s best gaming experiences aren?t available on a disc ? from the PlayStation Network titles like Journey and Sound Shapes to Xbox Live Arcade games like Fez and Spelunky. And when you include platforms like Steam, Apple?s App Store, or Google Play, the list gets pretty long. Thankfully gift cards for these platforms are readily available, and in the case of Steam you can even virtually gift games to your pals. Even better: since digital games are often cheaper than their retail counterparts, you?ll get a lot more bang for your buck.

XCOM: Enemy Unknown

Price: $59.99

What?s brilliant about XCOM isn?t so much what it carries over from the beloved tactical series it?s revitalizing, but rather what it leaves behind. Firaxis has done away with a lot of the cruft that can scare casual players off from the genre and is left with a leaner, streamlined game that?s as absorbing as it ever was. We would never have believed that turn-based combat could feel as thrilling and urgent as its real-time counterparts, but the new XCOM has proved us wrong.

Borderlands 2

Price: $55.29

When former president NRA Charlton Heston died, his spirit split, horcrux-like, into billions of shards and embedded in each of us a secret gun nut. While the previous sentence is almost certainly untrue, it?s the only explanation for how obsessed our staff has become with hoarding all of Borderlands 2?s nigh-infinite firearms. Want a gun that you throw like a grenade every time it reloads? No problem. Want a gun that fires bullets that makes it easier to set enemies on fire with yet another gun? It?s in there. Want our copy of Borderlands 2? You?ll take it from our cold dead hands you damn dirty ape.

Darksiders 2

Price: $49.99

Remember the magic of exploring the mystical realm of Hyrule for the first time in The Legend of Zelda? Darksiders 2 is like that but infinitely more metal. With chunky character design by '90s comics superstar artist Joe Madureira and a dark storyline about the apocalypse and the supernatural beings framed for committing it, each second of Darksiders 2 is like the sickest Iron Maiden album covers in motion. Just how metal is it? Well, you take on the role of DEATH HIMSELF. Mountains of loot to collect and a seemingly endless stream of quests make for a great game on top of all the gloomy imagery.

Meat Bun t-shirts

Price: $24+

Video game-themed clothing is rarely the most stylish fashion accessory, but Meat Bun's line of t-shirts is the rare exception. The shirts feature a regularly updated stable of great designs from notable artists, and they're even reasonably priced, at just $24 each. Our current favorites are the adorable "Meat Bun Kart" and "Dash Princess," which re-imagines Princess Peach as the cover girl for a Japanese crime flick

Awakening: The Art of Halo 4

Price: $22

For those Halo fans who want to dig a little deeper into the series' mythos, this new coffee table book from Titan Books offers some great insight into how the latest entry in the series was designed. It's jam-packed with beautiful concept art and sketches, covering everything from the environments in the game to alien creatures and vehicles to, of course, Master Chief himself. For a brief glimpse at what the book has to offer, be sure to check out our interview with Halo 4 concept artist Gabriel "Robogabo" Garza.

Amazon adds Unity plugins for Kindle Fire devs, makes inapp payments possible

Game devs looking to enhance "engagement" (read: monetization) for their mobile titles now have an ally in Amazon. The Bezos-backed company has just made plug-ins available free to Kindle Fire developers using the popular Unity game engine. Now those devs will have access to APIs for In-Game purchasing and GameCircle which, in the latter case, allows for the addition of Achievements, as well as the ability to Whispersync across devices. So, what does this mean for you, the end user? Well, aside from the ability to continue playing from where you last left off on any of the company's tabs, it also brings mobile gaming that much closer to the console experience. But mostly that you can look forward to a future bill filled with micropayments.

The incredible influence of football | My Sunday News

Maybe you hate football, maybe you are addicted to it, or maybe you don?t even care about it one way or another. The fact is, all sports played and watched in our country have an enormous impact on our economy and our lives, but none more than football. One day, as I was driving to Arlington Heights to watch my 6-year-old grandson, Gianni, play flag football, my mind began to drift to thoughts of the number of kids and adults involved in this sport.

Yes, it?s a very dangerous activity, especially at the professional level where 300-pound men smash into each other with great motivation to dominate their opponent, be it for financial gain, fame, personal pride, or all of the above. Sandwiched in between Gianni and the Brian Urlachers are millions of athletes, plus all the jobs that are directly or indirectly involved. Most of them are from the service and industrial sectors of our economy. They include medical, clothing, food and beverage, construction, media, hospitality, transportation, schools, recreation, and manufacturing, to name just a few. The list goes on with millions of jobs attached to the tentacles of just this one sport.

Don?t forget the jobs created by construction companies that build the stadium and facilities for fans to attend these events. What about the auxiliary activities, such as marching bands, cheerleaders, dance and pom pom groups? Think of all the energy used by all of the above, the zillions of gallons of fuel and kilowatts of power and the number of workers within those industries.

When you stop and think about it, would a school such as Notre Dame be as prominent if not for the likes of Knute Rockne and Touchdown for Jesus? What would take the place of the nation?s highest rated TV production ? the Super Bowl ? which commands unspeakable costs for a time spot. What would Texans do without Friday night football? What would take the place of Monday and Thursday Night Football on TV? Who would eat all the pizzas and salsa and chips and chicken wings? What about all the prayers said by players and fans asking God to intercede in their behalf? What about the millions of fantasy football players? Would they read a book or go to the movies? Shop or take up pickleball? Or just take a nap?

Okay, I do get carried away at times. But seriously, do I worry about Gianni? Of course I do, even though he wears a sponge-type helmet designed to protect him and other participants. I worry about all the kids and adults who risk injury in all sports, not just football. At age 74, I am still risking injury (or worse) playing sports. The fact is that none of this will change, at least in my lifetime.

The bottom line is I know what football and the rest of our sports mean to us as a nation in terms of our economy and opportunities for employment and as a recreational activity. Does this mean that you and I have nothing to say about the direction of sports in our country? In many cases, I?m sorry to say, we don?t; no more than we can personally affect the price of a gallon of gas. There are a lot of greedy individuals involved in the business of sports. They set a bad example for our youth. We also witness poor examples by athletes using drugs, disrespecting rules, etc. It bothers me that some professional athletes are revered as heroes even though they make bad choices in life, when the real heroes are those that serve humanity.

The most important things we can do as older Americans is to help teach those around us to respect each other, walk and talk sportsmanship in our daily lives, and be watchdogs for any potential injury risks and hazards.

If you feel strongly about this as I do, my suggestion is to become involved as a volunteer in a local youth activity. The park district and school teams can always use volunteers to assist in a variety of ways. It?s fun to be around the kids of today. Most of them are very respectful and welcome mentors. Sports are not your cup of tea? Then, how about the arts or volunteering in a classroom? Many of my neighbors are giving a day a week in our schools and loving it. Roberta Langham, Stan Auster, and Emma Burns, to name a few, are tutoring students in schools and the library in Huntley. I have worked with the marching bands at Huntley and Jacobs high schools and just love it! I sometimes feel like I?m benefiting at least as much as the students I work with in the percussion section.

So, you see, this column isn?t really about football or sports in general after all. It?s about volunteerism and being an example. It?s also about contributing and making a difference in the lives of others. Many organizations, sport teams, and classrooms can benefit from our experiences and training; after all, most of us are retired with more time on our hands.

I hope this motivates and inspires you, if you aren?t already volunteering, to make a few calls, talk to your neighbors, and discover where you can make a difference. That?s what I call old-fashioned American teamwork!

Boomerang Is a One-Stop Shop for Gifts for Your Facebook Friends

Boomerang Is a One-Stop Shop for Gifts for Your Facebook FriendsIf you're looking to skip the lines when shopping for holiday gifts, you can always order online, but it's hard to really personalize a gift. Boomerang is a web app where you can purchase local or national gifts quickly and they're delivered for you.

The selection on Boomerang ranges from wines to yoga lessons. The bulk of what you can order deals with gift cards, vouchers, subscriptions, and even charity donations. The handy part of Boomerang is that you can essentially order everything you need from one place without having to hit up a store, and a number of the gifts are even free. The local pick-ups are only available in a few cities, but the selection of national gifts is pretty wide. When you select a gift, the recipient will get a nice gift voucher email that they can redeem in the store. Boomerang is worth a look if you're looking for a one-stop shop to hunt down a bunch of different gifts. Boomerang does require Facebook to work, but otherwise it's free to use.

Superstorm was super-test for state and local leaders

Experts have given New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo, and New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg good reviews for their performances after hurricane Sandy.

New York Governor Andrew Cuomo greets residents of the Far Rockaways section of the Queens borough of New York, Nov. 10. Despite power returning to many neighborhoods in the metropolitan area, some residents of the Far Rockaways continue to live without power and heat due to damage caused by Superstorm Sandy.

For New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, leadership often came with an empathetic hug. For New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo, it came with an angry tirade at utilities slow to restore power. For New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg, it came with cool, businesslike assurance.

Experts in leadership and disaster response interviewed by The Associated Press gave all three chief executives high marks for their performance so far in Superstorm Sandy, a disaster that left more than 100 people dead and presented perhaps the biggest crisis-management test yet for three Northeastern politicians who have all been rumored to hold presidential ambitions.

"Throughout the country, what the American people seek is a kind of authenticity in their public leaders, and these three guys have demonstrated that authenticity throughout this crisis," said Syracuse University political science professor Robert McClure.

Most of those interviewed said Christie stood out for being the most outspoken and ahead of the curve, whether he was ordering gas rationing nearly a week before anyone else, putting his?GOP?credentials on the line to praise the Obama administration's response or using a televised briefing to comfort children with a simple: "Don't be scared."

He got so much attention that he even poked a bit of fun at himself with a cameo over the weekend on "Saturday Night Live," where he appeared in the familiar blue fleece jacket that he has worn while touring the state following the storm.

All three men took firm command before Sandy arrived. Cuomo closed New York City's subways and tunnels hours before there was a threat of flooding and strategically "pre-positioned resources" days before, a move the federal transportation secretary later praised. Christie struck a get-tough note in ordering people to clear out along the coast, barking, "Don't be stupid" on Twitter. Bloomberg calmly ordered an evacuation of the city's low-lying areas.

And their leadership continued after the storm had passed.

Douglas Brinkley, a Rice University historian who wrote an award-winning book on 2005's Hurricane Katrina and has also written about Presidents Ronald Reagan, Jimmy Carter, Theodore Roosevelt and Gerald Ford, said the first rule in a disaster is to rush rescue and relief to the victims to keep the death toll down.

"While Sandy has been tragic, with the amount of rescues that have taken place and the amount of life-saving that has gone down, it has helped keep the death toll not commensurate to the damage," he said. "In Hurricane Katrina, you lost 2,000 people. And a lot of them died because nobody got to them for a week."

Not everything went perfectly. Many of Sandy's victims have complained that the power outages went on for too long, that the gas station lines were infuriating, and that temporary housing against November's cold seemed to be an afterthought.

At times, the crisis threw all three men off balance: Bloomberg reversed himself in the face of a huge backlash and canceled the New York City Marathon, Christie picked a fight with the Atlantic City mayor for sending people to city shelters instead of evacuating them, and Cuomo's attacks on utilities thudded when he took on the Long Island Power Authority, a state utility over which he has some control.

Massachusetts To Grant In-State Tuition To Immigrants Who Qualify ...

Undocumented immigrants who qualify for deferred deportation will get tuition breaks at public colleges and universities in Massachusetts.

An unnamed official told The Boston Globe that Gov. Deval Patrick will send a letter Monday to High Education Commissioner Richard Freeland announcing the new policy.

The news marks a victory for immigration rights activists who argue that immigrants brought to the United States illegally as children should have a path to citizenship and be able to enjoy the same residency benefits as citizens.

Some oppose the change in policy, arguing that state resources should go to citizens.

Patrick had said previously he supported providing in-state tuition to undocumented residents of Massachusetts, according to a report by the State House News Service, calling it a ?matter of fairness.?

?They didn?t sneak in,? Patrick said, according to the State House News Service. ?They were brought here by their parents. They only know one country and that is the United States.?

But not all states have responded favorably to President Barack Obama?s June directive to defer deportation for undocumented immigrants who meet certain criteria.

Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer opposes allowing beneficiaries of deferred deportation to pay in-state tuition, though Maricopa Community Colleges officials say those who present work authorization will qualify to pay the state rate.

Four states, including Arizona, have laws that specifically prohibit undocumented immigrants from paying in-state tuition, according to the National Conference of State Legislatures. Alabama and South Carolina bar the undocumented from attending public colleges, regardless of how much tuition they pay.

New pope installed to lead church in Islamist-run Egypt

CAIRO (Reuters) - The Coptic Orthodox church staged a ceremony rich in ritual on Sunday to install its pope, Tawadros II, who Christians hope will guide them through the new, Islamist-led Egypt.

The 60-year-old pope was picked on November 4 and the ceremony on Sunday filled with incense, elaborate robes and chanting marked his formal ascendance as the 118th leader of the church.

Coptic Christians, whose church predates the arrival of Islam in Egypt, make up a tenth of Egypt's 83 million people.

Many fear their community, the biggest Christian group in the Middle East which has long complained of discrimination, will be squeezed to the sidelines of society under Islamists now ruling the Muslim-majority nation.

"We chose him because he is man who is obedient to God," said Bishop Bakhomious, who was pope in the interim period after Shenouda III died aged 88 in March after four decades in office.

"God had listened to our prayers and did not wish to leave us orphans for long," he added, as priests and bishops prayed for the new pope, dressing him in lavish embroidered vestments.

In the final stages, a red and gold mitre was placed on his head before he sat on a throne. The bearded and bespectacled pope trained as pharmacist before being ordained.

President Mohamed Mursi, propelled to power by the Muslim Brotherhood, did not attend the ceremony in the cathedral in Cairo's Abbasiya district to the dismay of some Christians who said it undermined his claim to be a leader for all Egyptians.

But he sent his prime minister, Hisham Kandil. Other officials and dignitaries also attended.

Tawadros II faces challenges delivering on the hopes of his flock. He told Reuters at a desert monastery west of Cairo a day after his was picked that the church would oppose any new constitution that only met Muslim concerns.

Liberals, moderate Muslims and Islamists are tussling over the shape of the constitution and extent of Islamic references in the document. A group of technical advisers quit the assembly drawing it up on Saturday, saying their voices were not being heard.

That complicates a process that is vital to completing Egypt's transition to democracy since Hosni Mubarak was toppled last year. A constitution must be in place before an election can be held to replace the dissolved parliament.

George Samir, a 32-year-old Copt who helped organize Sunday's service, said he had mixed emotions as he was reminded of the Shenouda's passing during the ceremony.

But he added: "I am happy to have a new pope, a new father and leader for the Christians. Pope Tawadros seems to be a very decent and modest leader. God bless him and bless us all."

Christians have long grumbled that they are sidelined in the workplace and in law, citing rules that make it easier to build a mosque than a church. A spate of attacks on churches since Mubarak's overthrow has further worried them.
